Greetings from the Wine Cellar:

This Sunday, June 18th is Father’s Day, so I’m going to make my annual pitch that a nice bottle of wine or two would make a great (and easy) gift for your Dad.  A fine bottle of wine, whether it’s a nice Napa Cabernet, a premium Tuscan red from Italy, a good bottle of Port – will be something he’s bound to appreciate and enjoy. Or a Wine Cellar Gift Certificate makes a great gift – let him pick out whatever strikes his fancy.  And if you’re lucky you might get invited over for a glass!

Also, Saturday June 17th the Old Town Wine Cellar will present one of our regular Saturday Afternoon Beer Tastings.  As always, we’ll start at noon and go until 6 PM, with a diverse selection of American craft beers and interesting imports to sample for a $5 tasting fee. It’s the best deal in town, and a great way to spend part of a summer afternoon in Yuma.  We hope to see you Saturday!

THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:

Miraflores 2014 Viognier (El Dorado County)    $21.99
This opens with scents of peach and pear fruit, mixing with hints of orange blossom. The enticing aromas introduce a similar flavor profile, enhanced with a silky texture and a mouthwatering lime-zest quality. It superbly melds lush fruit with light floral tones to create a distinctively crisp and superbly refreshing white.

Shannon Ridge 2013 Wrangler Red (Lake County)    $12.99
Shannon Ridge Wrangler Red has aromas of ripe cherry, blackberry, tobacco leaf and rich dark chocolate notes.  The flavor profile includes blackberry, red cherry, cinnamon spice and mocha. It’s a rich, polished red with supple tannins, fine balance and a lingering finish.

Charles Smith 2012 Boom Boom! Syrah (Washington)    $15.99
This Washington Syrah opens with bright red currant, plum and spice-box aromas.  In the mouth, it’s velvety and round, with a firm tannic structure along with enough snappy acidity to keep its lavish ripe fruit in balance all the way to a lengthy finish.

Renato Ratti 2012 Barbera d’Asti Battaglione (Piedmont, Italy)    $17.99
This is a “textbook” Piedmontese Barbera, offering delicate scents of red berries and spices on the nose, with light oak accents from 12 months of barrel aging. It’s bright and fresh in the glass, with concentrated berry and plum flavors along with a pleasantly spicy, smoky edge.

Marques de Vargas 2011 Conde de San Cristóbal (Ribera del Duero, Spain)    $22.99
A smoke- and spice-accented bouquet evokes candied cherry, cassis, violet and vanilla hints. Sweet and penetrating, this offers lively cherry and dark berry flavors that gain depth with air. The smoke and floral notes come back on the finish, which features a savory hint of mocha.
