Greetings from the Wine Cellar:

This week brings us the official first day of Fall, and it’s actually starting to feel a little like it, complete with a (slight) nip in the air first thing in the morning. The summer doldrums here in Yuma are just about past, so it’s all the more reason to venture forth and see what our community has to offer, especially Historic Downtown Yuma. And the highlight of our great downtown area has to the Old Town Wine Cellar. So come on down, enjoy our increasingly mellow early Fall weather and take a stroll down Main Street – hopefully you’ll end up right here in the Cellar!

THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:

Emmolo 2017 Sauvignon Blanc (Napa Valley)   $17.99 This is a fresh and fragrant Sauvignon Blanc, with bright, tangy ruby grapefruit, sweet lime, gooseberry and orange blossom on the nose. There’s plenty of depth and dimension to the flavors as well, with citrus, passionfruit and guava notes that lead to a crisp, clean finish.

Inscription 2018 Pinot Noir (Willamette Valley)   $19.99 Inscription Pinot Noir delivers lavish red fruit flavors of raspberry and strawberry, well complemented by the typical Oregon character of mushroom, forest floor and earth. It’s rich yet well-balanced, nicely enhanced with subtle toasted oak and vanilla notes from French oak aging.

Paringa 2012 Shiraz (South Australia)    $10.99 Paringa Shiraz offers aromas of blackberries and black currants, edged with hints of cinnamon and nutmeg.  The palate conveys the dark berry fruits of the nose with a delicate sweetness and soft, silky tannins. Accents of cedar and spice emerge on a velvety finish.

Terra d’Oro 2016 Old Vine Zinfandel (Amador County)   $17.99 This Zin is a fine example of Amador County “old vine” fruit. Terra d’Oro doesn’t have to coerce character from the grapes, nor do they attempt to hold any back. Juicy berry flavors are seasoned by classic Shenandoah Valley spice notes. French oak imparts vanilla and cinnamon tones to the finish.

Bonanza Lot 1 California Cabernet Sauvignon   $21.99 This wine opens with scents of currants, dried flowers and freshly tilled soil. Blueberry and blackberry flavors mix with hints of vanilla and toasted bread. With silky tannins and striking smoothness, a mouthwatering and lengthy finish shows notes of dark chocolate, cedar and cassis.

Marques de Murrieta 2015 Rioja Reserva (Rioja, Spain)   $24.99 On the nose, this Reserva offers exotic aromas of vanilla, cloves and cinnamon. The smooth and velvety palate exhibits abundant dark cherry and black plum fruit flavors, with exotic accents of fresh earth, tobacco and Indian spice that carry to the finish.

NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:

Campogiovanni 2012 Brunello di Montalcino (Tuscany, Italy)   $59.99 This Brunello opens with earthy aromas of leafy underbrush, dried porcini mushroom, pressed violet and charcuterie. It’s complex and superbly flavorful on the palate, with red currant and morello cherry fruit plus hints of fennel and black tea. A fine, silky mouthfeel holds through a refined and lengthy finish.

Dr. Pauly Bergweiler 2014 Riesling Spätlese, Wehlener Sonnnenuhr (Mosel Valley, Germany)   $29.99 This rushes the palate with explosive white peach, apple, pear and citrus flavors, plus hints of red fruits and a touch of banana. A vivid thread of stony minerality and spritzy, tongue-tingling acidity unfolds to complete the package. This tastes like pure nature…

Bodegas Garzón 2017 Tannat Reserva (Punta del Este, Uruguay)   $17.99 For textbook modern Uruguayan Tannat, look no further. A ripe dark fruit aroma melds with flowers, while this is smooth and balanced on the palate. Blackberry and spicy plum flavors are lightly touched by oak and peppery spices, with a fine lingering finish that brings it all home.

Cheers!
