Greetings from the Wine Cellar:

This week on Saturday, August 13th, the Old Town Wine Cellar will present another of our occasional Saturday Afternoon Beer Tastings.  We’ll get things started at noon Saturday and go on until closing at 6PM, with a selection of fine domestic craft beers and imported brews available to sample.  And I want to let everyone know that this week only, the Wine Cellar will be CLOSED on Tuesday, August 9th.  We will be back Wednesday thru Saturday as always, so please feel free to come down to Historic Downtown and sample some great wine (or beer!)

THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:

Riondo Prosecco Spago Nero (Veneto, Italy)    $14.99
Riondo Spago Nero  is made from 100% Prosecco grapes, but unlike most Italian Prosecco it’s not a sparkling wine.  It’s a floral, fruity and lighter-bodied white with a pleasant touch of spritz, and a light hint of sweetness balanced with deliciously refreshing acidity.

Tuscan Sun 2012 Auguri (Tuscany, Italy)    $17.99
Auguri is composed of 80% Sangiovese, with small additions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.  The wine opens with hints of violets, spiced fruits and fresh herbs.  The palate is distinguished by an excellent balance of ripe black cherry and plum fruit supported by solid, drying tannins.

Dreaming Tree 2013 Crush Red (California)    $12.99
The Crush Red is a California blend of 2/3 Zinfandel and 1/3 Merlot.  The wine greets the nose with lush aromas of ripe red raspberries, spice and vanilla.  The palate is all about fresh, juicy berry and cherry fruit carried on a soft, velvety texture.

Barossa Valley Estate 2013 Grenache-Syrah-Mourvedre (Barossa Valley, Australia)    $17.99
This is rich, dense and focused, a chewy mouthful of plum, raspberry and spice flavors riding on a velvety texture.  It’s a New World Rhone-style blend that shows balance and finesse while still retaining all the juicy exuberance that Aussie reds are renowned for.

Ernesto Catena 2013 Tahuan Malbec (Mendoza, Argentina)    $19.99
Catena’s Tahuan Malbec offers bright, pure aromas of dark cherry, blackberry, black olive, violets and licorice. The palate is velvety and plush, with layers of cherry, fig and raspberry fruit flavors followed by notes of cocoa, cedar and licorice that linger on a muscular finish.

Justin 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon (Paso Robles)    $24.99
Aromas of black cherry, currant and vanilla waft from the glass.  A soft, delicate entry is woven into a deep, plush palate that offers flavors of blueberry, cassis and a moderate touch of spice.  Ripe, supple tannins with a touch of dark chocolate frame the satisfying finish.

NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:

Zaca Mesa 2011 Estate Syrah (Santa Ynez Valley)    $17.99
Zaca Mesa is totally dedicated to producing the finest Rhone-style wines; they were the first to plant Syrah in Santa Barbara County way back in 1978. This estate-grown Syrah shows a vivid blackberry, white pepper and mocha character, with notes of dried sage.  It’s a classic match with hearty grilled and roasted meat dishes.

Bongiovanni 2015 Langhe Arneis (Piedmont, Italy)    $17.99
Arneis, native to Northern Italy’s Piedmont region, was rescued from near extinction in the latter part of the previous century, and it has since become a particular favorite of lovers of Italian white wines.  It makes a nicely dry and full-bodied wine with a distinctive ripe pear character, finely etched minerality and a richly floral finish.

André Brunel 2012 Cotes du Rhone Villages Cuvée Sabrine (Rhone Valley, France)    $16.99
This is made by the renowned Châteauneuf du Pape producer André Brunel, and 100% sourced from family-owned vineyards. Cuvée Sabrine is a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvedre. It’s loaded with meaty notes of blackberry and blueberry fruit, along with accents of smoke and tobacco leaf interlaced with hints of cherry confit, a telltale sign of fully ripe Grenache.

Cheers!
