Greetings from the Wine Cellar:

This coming Saturday, January 14th, the Old Town Wine Cellar will present our first (but certainly not last) Saturday Afternoon Beer Tasting of 2017.  The busy days of the holiday season precluded a beer tasting last month, and we have some really nice new craft beer arrivals just recently, so try to stop by Saturday afternoon and sample some of them.  As per usual, we’ll start at noon and go until 6PM, with six selections from our extensive lineup of American craft beers as well as imports for a tasting fee of just $5.  Hope you can make it!

THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:

Vera 2014 Vinho Verde (Portugal)    $11.99
Vera is as fresh and light as the maritime climate of northern Portugal.  You can drink this wine as the Portuguese do, lightly chilled as an end-of-the-workday relaxing apéritif, or as a delicious partner with snacks and lighter fare like sushi, seafood, pastas and salads.

Pietradolce 2013 Etna Rosso (Sicily, Italy)    $19.99
Etna Rosso is 100% Nerello Mascalese, a native Sicilian grape grown at an elevation of 2,000 feet on the slopes of the Mt. Etna volcano. It’s a medium-bodied, dry, and complex red, with an aromatic bouquet and vivid flavors of cherries, crushed raspberries and white pepper.  Polished tannins and good acidity make this a great dinner red.

Delas 2013 Côtes du Rhône Saint-Esprit (Rhone Valley, France)   $12.99
Saint-Esprit is made with primarily Grenache grapes, sourced from a small village in the southern Rhone. The vineyard’s southern exposure on steep, granitic hillsides provides a perfect growing environment. It’s a fresh and savory red, with rich fruit accented by spice notes.

Palacios Remondo 2012 La Montesa (Rioja, Spain)    $17.99
A mixture of Garnacha, Tempranillo and Mazuelo, La Montesa opens with scents of ripe red fruits, along with light notes of vanilla and toasty oak.  The mouthfeel is smooth and silky, offering flavors of dark plum and cherry with a touch of licorice.

Ernesto Catena 2013 Tahuan Malbec (Mendoza, Argentina)    $19.99
Ernesto Catena’s Tahuan offers bright, pure aromas of dark cherry, blackberry, black olive, violets and licorice. The palate is velvety and plush, with layers of cherry, fig and raspberry fruit flavors followed by notes of cocoa, cedar and licorice that linger on the muscular finish.`

Taken 2014 Cabernet-Merlot (Napa Valley)    $29.99
The Taken Red is a Napa blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. It’s a rich and full-throttle wine, with a juicy flamboyance supported by fine depth and elegance.  Intense aromas and flavors of ripe blackberries and blueberries mingle with accents of chocolate and espresso.

NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:

Michele Chiarlo 2014 Il Principe Langhe Nebbiolo (Piedmont, Italy)    $19.99
Il Principe Langhe Nebbiolo exudes a rich and alluring bouquet of raspberries and strawberries. The palate displays the classic varietal characteristics of ripe red cherries accented by complex accents of dry herbs, earth and cedar, carried on an elegantly smooth and silky tannic frame.

Angeline 2015 Reserve Pinot Noir (Mendocino / Sonoma)    $15.99
The Angeline Reserve is sourced from premium vineyards located in the cooler wine regions of California. Those foggy coastal influences help produce a classically styled and velvety Pinot Noir with a delicately spicy bouquet, keenly balanced acidity and dark berry fruit flavors.

Terra d’Oro 2014 Old Vine Zinfandel (Amador County)    $15.99
This Zin is a superb example of Amador County “old vine” fruit. Terra d’Oro doesn’t have to coerce character from the grapes, nor do they attempt to hold any back.  Juicy berry flavors are seasoned by classic Shenandoah Valley spice.  French oak imparts vanilla and cinnamon tones to a long, sumptuous finish.

Col Dorato Prosecco, Extra Dry (Veneto, Italy)    $14.99
Unique to Northern Italy’s Veneto, Prosecco is cherished for its expressiveness. The Col Dorato Prosecco is a vibrantly fresh sparkler with attractive aromas and fresh fruit flavors of ripe apple, peach and honeysuckle.  That delicious fruit is highlighted by zesty acidity.

Cheers!
