Greetings from the Wine Cellar:

This coming weekend in Historic Downtown Yuma has a distinctly Teutonic flavor, featuring the annual German Fest on Madison put on by my friends at Das Bratwurst Haus (204 Madison Ave., just off Main Street) this Saturday January 21st from 10AM to 8PM. It’s an Oktoberfest style street festival featuring German music, traditional German dancers, German food, a Kiddie Land Play area, and various street vendors. And, preceding the German Fest, Yuma Parks & Rec will offer an old German tradition: a Volksmarch thru the scenic East Wetlands Park along the Colorado River from 9AM to noon. The fee to participate in the Volksmarch is $5 per person (kids 12 & under free); contact Parks & Rec at 373-5200 for more info. This event is always lots of fun and the weather is sure to be beautiful so head Downtown this weekend, and feel free to stop by the Wine Cellar while you’re here!

THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:

Piattelli 2014 Torrontés (Cafayate Valley, Argentina)   $14.99

The Torrontés grape makes a deliciously fresh, crisp and aromatic wine, and has become the signature white wine of Argentina. This version is full of the typical lively and juicy tropical, citrus and floral flavors that the varietal is known for.

Angeline 2015 Reserve Pinot Noir (Mendocino / Sonoma)   $15.99

The Angeline Reserve is sourced from premium vineyards located in the cooler wine regions of California. Those foggy coastal influences help produce a classically styled and velvety Pinot Noir with a delicately spicy bouquet, keenly balanced acidity and dark berry fruit flavors.

Bogle Vineyards 2013 Essential Red (California)   $10.99

Bogle’s Essential Red is a delicious blend of some of California’s finest plantings of Zinfandel, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah, designed for one purpose – pure enjoyment. It’s all about the fruit, with intense flavors of boysenberry and cherry and a pleasant hint of vanilla.

Terra d’Oro 2014 Old Vine Zinfandel (Amador County)   $15.99

This Zin is a superb example of Amador County “old vine” fruit. Terra d’Oro doesn’t have to coerce character from the grapes, nor do they attempt to hold any back. Juicy berry flavors are seasoned by classic Shenandoah Valley spice. French oak imparts vanilla and cinnamon tones to a long, sumptuous finish.

Cascina Bongiovanni 2012 Barbera d’Alba (Piedmont, Italy)   $22.99

This is a traditionally styled Barbera that offers complex opening tones of vanilla, caramel and coffee from aging in small French oak barrels. The savory yet dry palate offers dark cherry and plum fruit flavors, with notes of spice and smoke.

Swanson 2012 Merlot (Napa Valley)   $27.99

Swanson well known for their focus on producing some of Napa’s finest Merlots, ever since the winery’s founding in 1985. This vintage is firm structured and dry yet elegantly styled, with rich spice accents that enhance a fruit-filled palate. The soft finish shows a slight touch of vanilla.

NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:

B.R. Cohn 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma / Napa)   $39.99

B.R. Cohn’s Gold Label Cabernet is made with fruit from select Sonoma and Napa County vineyards, with some of their own Olive Hill Estate Vineyard fruit added in. It’s a full-bodied, savory red, with aromas and flavors of ripe red currants, plums and cherries wrapped in spicy oak and cedar tones.

Folie à Deux 2013 Merlot (Alexander Valley)   $19.99

Sourced from premium vineyard sites in the cooler areas of Sonoma’s Alexander Valley, and aged nine months in oak to showcase the bright, expressive fruit aromas and flavors, this deliciously approachable Merlot offers rich dark cherry/berry flavors accompanied by enticing tones of vanilla and chocolate.

Mer Soleil 2014 Reserve Chardonnay (Santa Barbara County)   $24.99

Vintage after vintage, Mer Soleil is among the richest, most distinctive Chardonnays in all of California. The 2014 offers a lush mouthfeel that’s rich in apricot jam, crème brûlée and toasty butterscotch flavors, but for all the opulence it’s fully dry and has a zesty acidity to balance the creamy finish.

Belching Beaver Peanut Butter Milk Stout (Oceanside, California)  $7.99

Belching Beaver’s Peanut Butter Milk Stout is simply irresistible, almost like dark chocolate Reese’s in a glass. Rolled oats and cream add to the creamy texture, while aromas of roasted peanut butter and chocolate greet every sip. Try this beer out with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a real treat!

Cheers!
