This Saturday, January 26th, the 2019 Medjool Date Festival will take place right here in Historic Downtown from 10AM to 6PM on the Main Street Plaza, presented by Yuma Heritage Festivals and Bard Valley Medjool Date Growers.  Yuma and nearby Bard Valley are among the world’s leading producers of this gourmet date – the Medjools grown here are shipped worldwide.  The festival will feature live music, cooking demos with a celebrity chef and recipe contests, historical and art exhibits, street vendors and plenty of great festival food.  Join in the fun downtown Saturday!

 

THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:

 

Fontana Candida 2016 Frascati (Lazio, Italy)    $11.99 The grapes for this refreshingly dry, clean white grow in porous volcanic soils near the city of Rome.  A distinct minerality drives the aromas, with scents of peach, pear, citrus peel and basil. Dominant flavors of citrus and pear highlight the palate. plus a light touch of toasted almonds.

 

Line 39 2016 California Pinot Noir     $14.99 Line 39 Pinot offers delicate aromas of violets, spices and dark cherry with hints of vanilla.  The smooth palate presents juicy flavors of dark fruits like plum and back cherry.  Firm tannins frame a fine finish of dark fruit and spice, with a pleasantly light touch of oak.

 

Villa Nozzole 2014 Chianti Classico (Tuscany, Italy)    $19.99 This Classico offers aromas of crushed dark cherries along with undertones of coffee and licorice on the nose. The palate is fresh and balanced, with silky tannins wrapped around a fruit-filled core of ripe black cherry and red raspberry, ending in a pleasantly spicy finish.

 

Skyfall Vineyard 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon (Columbia Valley)    $15.99 The Skyfall Vineyard’s Cabernet Sauvignon is full-bodied and elegant, with scents of black currants and dark cherries accented by hints of dark chocolate and vanilla. Alluring flavors of blackberries and blueberries create a lush mid-palate, ending with a rich, savory finish.

 

Ferrari Carano 2016 Siena (Sonoma County)    $19.99 Siena begins with rich black cherry aromas, plus subtle hints of fennel and licorice. Ripe red fruit flavors follow the nose, shaped by a pleasant acidity and soft tannins in this Sangiovese-based red blend.  Tart cherry pie flavors linger at the finish, accented by a touch of chocolate the finish.

 

Vall Llach 2015 Embruix (Priorat, Spain)    $24.99 Embruix is a blend of 30% Garnacha, 27% Merlot, 20% Samso, 18% Syrah and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.  The nose offers alluring aromas of ripe plums, fresh ground black pepper and clove. Bright flavors of black cherries, fresh herbs, vanilla and mineral mingle harmoniously amid solid yet very supple tannins.

 

NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:

 

Whitehall Lane 2015 Tre Leoni (Napa Valley)    $24.99 Tre Leoni, a proprietary blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah & Zinfandel,  really delivers the goods when it comes to plentiful, well-ripened fruit.  It offers rich flavors of cassis and dark berries plus hints of herbs, sweet oak, cedar and black tea on a mouthfilling, savory, luscious palate.

 

Sea-Sun 2016 California Chardonnay    $21.99 Sea-Sun has a subtle nose of lightly grilled mango, soft butterscotch, apricots and newly ripened pineapple. The palate is creamy, with flavors of lemon curd and brown spice.  A toasty quality offers hints of cinnamon and lemon squares, ending with a fine measure of refreshing acidity.

 

Celler de Capçanes 2014 Mas Donís Old Vines (Montsant, Spain)    $14.99 Mas Donis is a blend of 85% Garnacha (Grenache) and 15% Syrah, aged for nine months in French and American oak. The Garnacha is sourced from 70-year-old vines.  Vibrant cherry and dark berry flavors are edged by vanilla and spice, along with subtle elements of herbs and toasty oak.

 

King Harbor Brewing Roots & Wings Strong Ale (Redondo Beach, CA)    $11.99 Roots & Wings is an English-style Strong Ale that’s aged in Cabernet Sauvignon wine barrels.  Wine barrel aging softens this beer and enriches the flavors, creating a complex mix of elements like chocolate, vanilla and caramel along with enticing dark fruit overtones, ending on a smooth, rich finish.
