Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
This Saturday, February 1st, the Old Town Wine Cellar will host a fundraiser for the Arizona Nurses Association Scholarship Fund from 2 – 6PM, featuring a Silpada Sterling Silver Jewelry Show. And of course, a selection of wines will be available by the glass all during the show for just $5. All proceeds from jewelry and wines sales go toward nursing scholarships in the state of Arizona. Silpada makes really great looking sterling silver jewelry at surprisingly reasonable prices – for an advance look, check out www.mysilpada.com/sharon.perry. Come by the Wine Cellar Saturday afternoon, shop for yourself or your valentine and help out Yuma nursing students – and enjoy a glass while you’re at it!
THURSDAY & FRIDAY WINE TASTING – $10.00 to try all six, or $10.00 for a glass:
Pine Ridge 2012 Chenin Blanc-Viognier (Clarksburg) $14.99
This wine shows hints of both varietals on the nose, with the honeydew melon character of Chenin Blanc uplifted by a hint of wildflowers from the Viognier. It’s crisp and fresh in the mouth, with a nice blend of citrus, pear and melon fruit flavors.
Talbott 2011 Estate Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands $29.99
This estate-grown Pinot Noir is from Talbott’s acclaimed Sleepy Hollow Vineyard. It exudes a lovely perfume of black cherries, plums, balsam and spice. It offers admirable concentration and structure, yet still displays finesse and approachability. Flavors of dark stone fruits with a riff of oak toast and spice coat the palate, supported by silky tannins.
Bertani 2010 Valpolicella (Veneto, Italy) $14.99
Valpolicella is a traditional Veneto blend of native Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara grapes. The nose offers supple scents of almonds and violets. It’s silky in texture, showing more depth than most Valpolicellas, with a nice mix of dark cherry fruit and hints of dark chocolate.
Sicoris 2009 Costers Del Segre (Spain) $15.99
Sicoris is a Spanish blend of 35% Grenache, 25% Cabernet and 25% Tempranillo, with small additions of Merlot and Syrah. It was aged for 10 months in a mix of French and American oak. Savory notes of cedar, spices and violets on the nose lead on to a round, pleasant, smooth-textured red.
Trivento 2011 Reserve Malbec (Mendoza, Argentina) $24.99
Trivento’s Reserve bottling offers rich aromas of black cherry, blackberry, black olives, violets and fennel. The palate is smooth and plush, with vivid layers of cherry, fig and raspberry fruit followed by cocoa, cedar and licorice notes on a muscular finish.
North Star 2009 Merlot (Columbia Valley) $34.99
Aged in French oak for 18 months, this has an alluring bouquet of dark cherry, currants and toast. The palate is superbly balanced, silky and elegant. Leaning heavily towards the more finesse-driven aspect of the wine spectrum, it displays smooth tannins with a moderate level of power and concentration.
NEW ARRIVALS:
Conundrum 2011 California Red $17.99
Intensely colored and fragrant, this exudes evocative aromas of blackberry, raspberry, rhubarb and cola. The palate is full-bodied and exuberantly fruity, pairing black cherry, plum and pomegranate with cinnamon and lavender nuances. The tannins are supple and rich, with a nice touch of toasty vanilla.
Bogle 2010 Phantom California Red $18.99
Bogle’s Phantom is a blend of Petite Sirah, Zinfandel and Mourvedre grapes, sourced from really old vines. It offers concentrated red raspberry, dark chocolate and red and black currant flavors, framed by cedar and vanilla. It’s one big, bold mouthful of fruit…
Kaiken 2011 Ultra Malbec (Mendoza, Argentina) $21.99
A wine of great structure and power, this offers sweet plum, currant and black cherry flavors accented by well-integrated oak and polished tannins that are soft yet enveloping. It shows outstanding balance, with a long and elegant finish.
Cheers!
