Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
A couple of quick notes for this week: The Wine Cellar will offer another of our Saturday Afternoon Beer Tastings this coming Saturday, February 20th. It’s been a while since we had one, and there sure seems to be some pent-up demand judging from how many requests I’ve gotten lately. We have some interesting new craft brews on the shelf that certainly merit sampling, so make your way down to the Cellar this Saturday between noon and 5PM and check them out.
Also, this Thursday, February 18th, my friends at Yuma Investment Group, a full-service Personal Financial Planning & Wealth Management firm here in Yuma, will be at the Old Town Wine Cellar once again to host our Wine Tasting that day from 5 to 7 PM. They asked me to especially invite any real estate professionals who can take time from their busy days to stop by the Cellar and enjoy a glass of vino on them. But of course the invitation extends to everyone, so feel free to stop in Thursday and taste this week’s wines courtesy of Yuma Investment Group!
THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING):
Dr. H. Thanisch 2012 Estate Riesling (Mosel Valley, Germany) $17.99
This Estate Riesling from one of the Mosel Valley’s finest producers is just like biting into a juicy, crunchy apple, with a dash of citrus plus a hint of minerally slate thrown in. A superb partner with lighter cuisines, and a wonderful apéritif wine all by itself.
Virginia Dare 2014 Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley) $19.99
Fragrant, floral and redolent of dark cherry fruit, this exhibits all the delicacy and allure of this classic varietal. Notes of rose petal, caramel and forest floor weave through the deep, rich dark-fruit core. The palate is well balanced and silky, framed by soft tannins.
Farmers of Wine 2013 Italian Red (Puglia, Italy) $14.99
Farmers of Wine is a southern Italian blend of native Negroamaro and Primitivo grapes grown by small family farmers in southern Italy’s “boot-heel,” Puglia. The wine offers intense, bright aromas of ripe fruits with hints of licorice. The palate delivers a delicious mouthful of red fruit flavors with food-friendly acidity.
Bodegas Castaño 2012 Solanera Viña Viejas (Yecla, Spain) $14.99
The Solanera is a blend of 70% Mourvedre, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Grenache from very old, low-yielding vines. The wine was aged for ten months in a combination of French and American oak. It’s rich and ripe, reflecting a classic Mediterranean character.
Joseph Carr 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa County) $21.99
This Cabernet embodies a traditional, old-school approach, where terroir is allowed to express itself and the “art of the blend” creates wines with complexity and balance. Joseph Carr worked with small growers in Napa County to put together this cuvée, a wine that offers richness, depth and elegance.
Duckhorn 2011 Paraduxx (Napa Valley) $39.99
Duckhorn’s Paraduxx, a Napa Valley Zinfandel-Merlot-Cabernet blend, opens with vibrant aromas of raspberry, cherry, cedar and spice, with a touch of caramelized brown sugar. Dark cherry and red raspberry fruit flavors greet the palate, accented with rich, compelling layers of cedar and sweet oak.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
Warre’s 2003 Late Bottled Vintage Port (Douro Valley, Portugal) $32.99
Warre’s LBV is offered only in top vintages. The wine is aged in oak for up to four years and then aged for another four years in the bottle before release. In contrast to typical late-bottled vintage ports, this is made without the use of fining or filtration, which creates a wine with a true vintage character.
Beran 2013 California Zinfandel $18.99
Grapes for the Beran Zinfandel are sourced from acclaimed, multi-generational growers in Sonoma, Napa, Mendocino, Amador County and and other notable appellations. This cuvee has aromas of blueberry pie, raspberry and dark chocolate. The palate’s deliciously rich, with juicy cherry and berry fruit flavors plus hints of cloves and pepper on a long finish.
Chalk Hill 2014 Chardonnay (Sonoma Coast) $18.99
Chalk Hill’s 2014 Chardonnay begins with lush aromas of apple, peach, tropical fruits and light, smoky spice tones. The palate combines crisp, fresh flavors of Asian pear and hints of jasmine blossom. A rich, creamy, “sur-lie” quality is well balanced by cleansing minerality at the finish.
North by Northwest 2013 Red Blend (Columbia Valley) $15.99
North by Northwest is a project of King Estate Winery, a premier Pacific Northwest producer for over 25 years. This Washington blend of Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon offers an alluring nose of blackberry fruit and notes of spicy vanilla. A robust, fruit-filled palate is framed with smooth, silky tannins.
Cheers!
