Greetings from the Wine Cellar:

This Saturday, March 10th, Historic Downtown Yuma will host Yuma’s Military Appreciation Day.  This will be a day to honor, celebrate and say “Thank You” to our great men and women in the armed forces and to their families, both active duty and retired.  Festivities will go on from 9AM to 3PM on the Main Street Plaza.  Opening ceremonies will be at 10AM with dignitaries on hand from Yuma Proving Ground, Marine Corps Air Station Yuma and the City of Yuma.  There will also be a free pancake breakfast from 8 to 9:30AM for veterans, and a free barbecue lunch for active duty members from 11:30 to 1PM.  This event will feature military displays, exhibits, demonstrations, music and food for the entire family.  For more info, contact the Yuma Chamber of Commerce at 782-2567.  Come on downtown Saturday and help give all our servicemen and women, their families and our Veterans a well-earned salute!

THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:

Feudo Maccari 2016 Grillo (Sicily, Italy)    $14.99 A varietal native to Sicily, Grillo offers zesty aromas of citrus, pear and white flowers. The palate displays nectarine, pineapple and yellow apple alongside vibrant acidity, and a hazelnut accent enlivens the brisk, refreshing finish.

Villa Nozzole 2014 Chianti Classico (Tuscany, Italy)    $19.99 This Classico offers aromas of crushed dark cherries along with undertones of coffee and licorice on the nose. The palate is fresh and balanced, with silky tannins wrapped around a fruit-filled core of ripe black cherry and red raspberry, ending in a pleasantly spicy finish.

Bodegas Príncipe de Viana 2013 Graciano (Navarra, Spain)    $10.99 This wine is from Navarra, a region next to the far more famous Rioja.  Graciano , a native Spanish varietal, makes a lively and enjoyable red, with a nose of black raspberries, smoky minerals and spicy oak.  Flavors of ripe cherry and cassis come to a peppery finish.

Le Cirque 2011 Vin Rouge (Côtes Catalanes, France)    $15.99 The Le Cirque is from the Côtes Catalanes, a sub-region of the Languedoc-Roussillon appellation of southern France.  A blend of Grenache, Carignan, Syrah and Mourvedre grapes, it’s a big, bold red, with smoky, spicy black cherry, cassis and garrigue aromas and flavors.

Juggernaut 2015 Hillside Cabernet Sauvignon (California)    $19.99 This wine fills the senses with deep, fully ripe blackberry, cassis and black cherry aromas and flavors, edged with hints of violet, tobacco and old leather.  The wine expands across the palate in broad, rich flavors, within a firm structure of polished tannins. Hints of spice and cedar linger on the intense finish.

Tensley 2014 Syrah (Santa Barbara County)    $24.99 Winemaker Joey Tensley’s Santa Barbara Syrah offers vivid blueberry and black raspberry scents to go with notes of pepper, licorice and violets.  It’s just as alluring in the mouth, with terrific depth and richness, ripe dark fruit flavors and a savory hint of herbs.

NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:

Penfolds Max’s Shiraz-Cabernet Sauvignon (South Australia)    $19.99 This deep magenta-hued blend of 70% Shiraz and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon starts with a nose of blackberry and powdered earth.  White pepper graces its inky espresso structure, inching its way through bold notes of plum and beetroot. Violets chime in mid-palate, while a meaty grilled sensation is spiced to the “max” on the finish.

Rombauer 2016 Sauvignon Blanc (Napa Valley)    $22.99 This wine exudes aromas of ripe lime and lemon, grapefruit, pear and nectarine with a hint of fresh-cut grass. On the palate it’s fresh and enticing, as grapefruit, nectarine and passion fruit mingle with vibrant citrus notes of Meyer lemon and lime that make the mouth water. Balanced, fresh acidity lingers on the palate, inviting another sip…

Taylor Fladgate First Estate Reserve Port (Douro Valley, Portugal)    $20.99 Deep ruby in hue, this Port has a potent nose of concentrated black fruit aromas.  On the palate, a medley of black currant, blackberry, plum and licorice flavors are carried on a silky and rich texture, with a firmly tannic structure that contributes to the restrained elegance for which Taylor Fladgate’s Ports have long been famed.

Cheers!
