Greetings from the Wine Cellar:

Saturday evening, March 25th, the Foothills Optimist Club will present their annual Wine Tasting Fundraiser on the grounds of the Sanguinetti House Museum (240 S. Madison Ave.) from 6:30 to 8:30 PM.  This is the club’s annual benefit event to raise funds for their ongoing youth programs, and I can tell you they are always a lot of fun.  We used to do them here at the Wine Cellar, but the change in venue to the Sanguinetti House Museum grounds allows folks to sample the wines (along with lots of great appetizers) while enjoying our mellow Yuma spring weather in a beautiful garden-like setting.  Give Mary Ann Moreno a call at 580-7293 if you’d like to order tickets (cost is $25 per person, or $20 for groups of four or more); tickets will also be available at the door.  And of course yours truly will be selecting and pouring the wines, so I hope to see you there!

THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:

Chateau La Freynelle 2015 Entre-Deux-Mers (Bordeaux, France)    $14.99
This is a classic “White Bordeaux” blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Muscadelle grapes. It offers a lush, fruity nose of white peaches, citrus fruits and beeswax.  An elegant, fresh palate showcases bright fruit flavors that are framed by zesty minerality, finishing crisp and clean.

Bodega Chacra 2014 Barda Pinot Noir (Patagonia, Argentina)    $24.99
Bodega Chacra’s estate vineyards are located in Patagonia’s Rio Negro valley, some of them planted as long ago as the 1930’s. This cherry-and-lavender-scented Pinot Noir leans toward the Burgundian style, with its distinct earth and spice character and polished, fine-grained tannins.

Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi 2014 Chianti Castiglioni (Tuscany, Italy)    $14.99
Tuscany is considered the heart and soul of Italian wines, and the Frescobaldi family has been making wine there for over 800 years.  The Castiglioni is classic Chianti, with raspberry, cherry and plum flavors edged by exotic notes of spice and herbs.

Renwood 2014 Old Vine Zinfandel (Amador County)    $15.99
This Old Vine Zin opens with enticing aromas of ripe blackberries and raspberries plus exotic hints of mulling spices like clove and cinnamon.  On the palate, the rich, ripe berry fruit flavors are enlivened with dashes of mint, black licorice, vanilla and spicy oak.

Hope Estate 2010 The Ripper Shiraz (Western Australia)    $17.99
Hope Estate’s Ripper Shiraz has intense aromas of rich dark berries and plums layered with underlying hints of fragrant spice and dark chocolate. It’s juicy and deep on the palate, with plenty of bright, fresh berry fruit, finely balanced tannins and well-integrated oak.

Duckhorn 2014 Paraduxx (Napa Valley)    $39.99
Duckhorn’s Paraduxx, a Napa Valley Cabernet-Zinfandel blend, opens with vibrant aromas of raspberry, cherry, cedar and spice, with a touch of caramelized brown sugar.  Dark cherry and red raspberry fruit flavors greet the palate, accented with rich, compelling layers of cedar and sweet oak.

NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:

Les Granières de la Nerthe Chateauneuf-du-Pape (Rhone Valley, France)    $39.99
This classic Rhone Valley blend begins with black cherry and raspberry aromas enlivened with zesty mineral and floral accents, plus a hint of baking spices.  On the palate, vibrant red berry flavors offer superb richness, balance and depth, gliding to an elegant, silky finish.

Groth 2016 Sauvignon Blanc (Napa Valley)    $19.99
This was produced with grapes sourced from varying microclimates of the Napa Valley. Fruit from warmer sites provides a rich and juicy melon and citrus character to both the aromas and flavors.  Grapes from cooler vineyard sites give it a crisp and refreshing quality and a tangy finish.

Recanati 2013 Merlot (Galilee, Israel)    $17.99
A deep ruby in the glass, this wine offers rich aromas of cherry, fennel and orange peel and follow with flavors of blackberry, dark cherry, cassis, anise and eucalyptus. Long-lasting tannins coat the palate, but the deliciously ripe fruit flavors remain in the forefront along with a brightness that lingers pleasantly to the satisfying finish.

Sierra Nevada Ovila Abbey Ales Mixed 3-Pack (Chico, California)    $34.99
The Ovila Abbey Ales are a collaboration by Sierra Nevada with the monks of the Abbey of New Clairvaux in Vina, CA.  Each of the beers is a modern twist on a traditional style of Belgian abbey ale.  These rotating Ovila Abbey Ales highlight local ingredients grown and harvested by the monks on their 600-acre working farm.

Cheers!
