Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
Mother’s Day is almost upon us, this Sunday the 11th of May to be exact. As I’ve said before (almost every year in fact), there’s no better way to let Mom know just how much you care for her than by giving her a nice bottle of wine for her special day (you could also say “I love you Mom – but why not do both?) Drop by the Cellar this week and we’ll help you pick out a bottle that will make her Mom’s Day even more special. And while you’re here, you can hang out and taste some great wine!
THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING – $10.00 for a taste of all six:
Castello Banfi 2012 Principessa Gavia Gavi (Piedmont, Italy) $14.99
Banfi’s Principessa Gavi exudes pleasant scents of green apple with a floral accent. It’s a light-bodied white that’s refreshing, fruity and fun. Green apple, juicy lime and white pear flavors edged with keen acidity make this the perfect apéritif. The ending is clean and crisp, with lasting tart fruit flavors.
Folie à Deux 2011 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) $19.99
Folie à Deux’s Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir opens with intense aromas of ripe plum, dark cherry and raspberry followed by subtle notes of earthy truffle and spice. Precise and clean, this wine has an alluring palate of ripe black cherry fruit edged with a hint of tobacco leaf.
Domaine de la Chique 2008 Côtes du Roussillon (Languedoc-Roussillon, France) $14.99
Located near the Spanish border and the Mediterranean Sea, Domaine de la Chique lies in the middle of a 50 year-old olive grove. A blend of Grenache, Carignan and Syrah, this deep purple-colored wine is supple and round, with ripe black fruit flavors and undertones of chocolate and peppery spice.
Roth Estate 2010 Merlot (Alexander Valley) $17.99
Roth Estate Merlot is a densely structured red with aromas of black cherries, violets, cedar and a touch of spice. On the palate, rich flavors of blackberries, black currants and dark chocolate mingle on a smooth-as-silk texture, ending with a lengthy finish.
Querciabella 2009 Mongrana (Tuscany, Italy) $21.99
Mongrana is a ‘Super-Tuscan’ blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon made with fruit sourced from Tuscany’s coastal Maremma region. Bright red cherry and currant flavors are enhanced with a touch of cedar. Smooth tannins and beaming acidity complete this elegant red.
Seghesio 2012 Zinfandel (Sonoma County) $22.99
This Sonoma Zin has an aromatic bouquet full of plum, blackberry and blueberry, with hints of red currants and black pepper. It’s a full-bodied wine with excellent structure that’s true to the varietal, nicely enhanced by a pleasant touch of toast on the palate.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
Trinchero Family 2009 Napa Valley Merlot, Chicken Ranch Vineyard (Napa Valley) $29.99
Ideally situated on the northern edge of the Rutherford appellation, Trinchero’s 28-acre Chicken Ranch Vineyard yields elegant and distinctive Merlot. The 2009 release is an old-world style with raspberry and cigar-box aromas, rich red fruit flavors and structured tannins.
Rotari Brut “Metodo Classico” (Trentino, Italy) $14.99
Fresh apple and light toast aromas lead into this creamy, richly-flavored sparkler, with tart apple flavors nicely balanced by snappy acidity. It stays fresh and clean all through a brisk, snappy finish. This is made from 100% Chardonnay, in the traditional method of Champagne.
Domaine Gramenon 2012 Poignée de Raisins Côtes du Rhône (Rhone Valley, France) $24.99
Gramenon’s Fistful of Grapes is essentially just that – Grenache grapes thrown into a vat, fermented and bottled. Wine just doesn’t get any more natural – this goes well beyond most wines labeled ‘organic.’ The uninhibited, spectacular fruit of a young Grenache is rarely captured in bottle, but here it is in all its glory…
Cheers!
