Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
They say Memorial Day Weekend marks the “unofficial” start of summer, but here in Yuma it’s pretty much official: summer is here. That said, the weather is still pretty darn pleasant, even if trending a bit hotter as the days and weeks pass. There will be lots going on here in Historic Downtown Yuma this summer, and we’ll do our best to keep everyone informed about the events and happenings downtown that help make a toasty summer in the Great Southwest a little more tolerable. And there will always be wine tasting at the Old Town Wine Cellar every day all day, Tuesday through Friday, reason enough to make it downtown on a regular basis!
THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:
Van Duzer 2016 Estate Pinot Gris (Willamette Valley) $18.99 This is a vibrant and delicious Pinot Gris with a fine mineral edge. A fragrant nose of Bosc pears, ripe peaches and orange blossoms reminiscent of a fragrant citrus grove leads into a flavorful palate of lush white peach and citrus zest. The wine is juicy, rich and elegant, with crisp acidity.
Rocca Delle Macie 2015 Chianti Classico (Tuscany, Italy) $16.99 This Classico begins with fresh black cherry aromas, mixed in with hints of leather, earth, plums and violets. The palate is medium-bodied, with supple tannins and good acidity. Classic Chianti flavors of ripe dark cherry and plum are edged with a hint of licorice.
Bodegas Sommos 2016 Xiloca Garnacha (Calatayud, Spain) $10.99 Xiloca Garnacha is sourced from 250 acres of estate vineyards that are between 40 and 100 years old. This wine offers ripe black cherry and black raspberry hints on a fragrant nose, with rich dark fruit flavors on the palate. It’s smooth and soft in texture, with a peppery nuance that gives it a pleasant lift.
Renwood 2014 Old Vine Zinfandel (Amador County) $15.99 This classic Old Vine Zin opens with enticing aromas of ripe blackberries and raspberries plus exotic hints of mulling spices like clove and cinnamon. On the palate, the rich, ripe berry fruit flavors are enlivened with dashes of mint, black licorice, vanilla and spicy oak.
Tyrrell’s 2014 Estate Shiraz (Hunter Valley, Australia) $22.99 This Aussie Shiraz offers intense aromas of rich dark berries and plums, layered with underlying notes of fragrant spice and dark chocolate. It’s rich and round on the palate, with plenty of bright, fresh berry fruit, finely balanced tannins and well-integrated oak.
Flora Springs 2014 Merlot (Napa Valley) $24.99 Sourced from the Flora Springs estate vineyard in Rutherford (75%), along with fruit from owned vineyards in Pope Valley (16%) and Oakville (9%). Blending fruit from these diverse growing regions creates a wine with a vibrant dark fruit character in addition to a panoply of spices and other complex flavor elements.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
Pahlmeyer 2015 Jayson Chardonnay (Napa Valley) $49.99 A bright gold in color, this Chard opens with floral aromas of acacia flower and honeysuckle, plus notes of ripe apricot and peach. A silky mouthfeel supports a rich and complex palate with flavors of lemon meringue, honeydew melon and a touch of mandarin orange. The finish is long and clean, with notes of warm vanilla and roasted pecans.
Argiano 2015 Non Confunditur (Tuscany, Italy) $19.99 The ‘NC’ is a Tuscan red with a full-bodied character, smooth tannins, and a persistent finish. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Sangiovese, it deftly melds the gentleness of Merlot with the earthiness of Sangiovese, the rich cassis flavors of Cabernet and the warm red berries of Syrah. The result is a generous and round red with bright aromas of currants and generous fruit flavors.
Adorata 2016 California Pinot Gris $17.99 Adorata is a juicy and aromatic California Pinot Gris, exuding orange blossom, ruby grapefruit and apricot aromas and flavors, with just a hint of toasted coconut. Tangy acidity and a deft note of minerality keeps it clean and refreshing.
Cheers!
