Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
Summer has now officially begun here in Yuma, although it seems like it got here some time ago, as always. Just remember, the Old Town Wine Cellar makes a cool and inviting place to escape the heat for at least a little while, and enjoy a glass or two of one of our featured wines of the week while you’re doing it. So we hope to see you soon!
FEATURED WINES THIS WEEK: ($10 for a glass, $5 for a half-glass)
Feudo Maccari 2016 Grillo (Sicily, Italy) $14.99
A grape varietal native to Sicily, Grillo offers zesty aromas of citrus, pear and white flowers. The palate displays nectarine, pineapple and yellow apple with vibrant acidity, and a subtle hazelnut accent enlivens the brisk, refreshing finish.
Angeline 2018 Rosé of Pinot Noir (California) $9.99
This rosé offers delicious aromas of peach, dried apricot, and mandarin zest, with a backdrop of fragrant citrus blossom. A fresh entry of tart cherry, wild strawberry and honeyed cantaloupe leads into a crisp citrus mid-palate, with a clean, tangy acidity on the brisk finish.
Laetitia 2016 Estate Pinot Noir (Arroyo Grande Valley) $22.99
Exuding dark mulberry tones and aromas of cranberry and spiced plums, this Pinot is rich and medium-bodied. Youthful flavors of pomegranate, sandalwood and black cherry are married beautifully with spicy cedar and smoke accents, all framed with silky tannins.
Rodney Strong Vineyards 2017 Upshot Red (Sonoma County) $18.99
The Upshot Red is a multi-varietal blend, with all the fruit sourced from vineyards in Sonoma County. The result is a rich, supple red bursting with berry and black cherry fruit and savory spice notes, with round tannins and a lifted backbone of acidity. A blend of 31% Merlot, 31% Zinfandel and 30% Malbec, with small additions of Riesling and Petit Verdot.
Famiglia Pasqua 2016 Passimento Rosso (Veneto, Italy) $18.99
Essentially a turbo-charged Valpolicella, this is made with partially dried grapes to concentrate flavors prior to fermentation. It contains some Merlot in addition to the indigenous Corvina and Croatina grapes to add smoothness. The result is a rich, succulent wine with flavors of cherry jam, plums and spice that are savory and dry.
Duckhorn 2018 Postmark Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) $29.99
The latest addition to Duckhorn Winery’s portfolio, the Postmark Cabernet reflects the character of Duckhorn’s iconic Napa Valley roots, with its inviting layers of cassis and blackberry fruit, silky tannins and long, rich finish that will definitely leave you wanting more.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
Joseph Phelps 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) $79.99
This overflows with seductive aromas of ripe black currants and cherries, woven together with sweet baking spices, mocha, sage and hints of dusty minerals. It’s full-bodied and voluptuous on the palate, with silky tannins. It displays outstanding depth and elegance, with layers of luscious fruit and sweet spice notes resonating through an opulent finish.
Stemmari 2016 Dalila Bianco Riserva (Sicily, Italy) $15.99
Blending the Sicilian varietal Grillo with the Viognier of France, this exudes the sunlight and richness of Sicily. Grillo brings intense, exotic tropical notes of mango intermingled with delicate notes of wildflowers and stone fruits. Viognier expresses delicate notes of peach and apricots, with a touch of honey.
Hearst Ranch Winery 2017 Three Sisters Cuvée (Paso Robles) $17.99
Hibiscus and strawberry scents are an appealing invitation on the nose of this Rhone-style blend of Grenache (54%), Syrah and Mourvèdre, and then peppery spice notes up the ante. It would make a perfect summertime red, served with a slight chill to showcase its flavors of red cherries, sandalwood and tarragon.
Cheers!
