Greetings from the Wine Cellar:

I regretfully announce that vacation is over, but the good news is that the Old Town Wine Cellar is resuming our normal open hours immediately, those being 11AM – 7 PM Tuesdays through Fridays and 10AM – 6PM Saturdays.  Actually, it’s great to be back and I look forward to seeing everyone; but it sure has warmed up since we left in May!  But that’s simply all the more reason to head down to the Wine Cellar when you can and enjoy a nice glass of wine in our very COOL setting here in Historic Downtown.  Hope to see you soon!

THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:

Dr. H. Thanisch 2012 Estate Riesling (Mosel Valley, Germany)    $17.99
This Estate Riesling from one of the Mosel Valley’s finest producers is just like biting into a juicy, crunchy apple, with a dash of citrus plus a hint of minerally slate thrown in.  A superb partner with lighter cuisines, and a wonderful apéritif wine all by itself.

Saint Gregory 2012 Pinot Noir (Mendocino County)    $19.99
Mendocino County’s cool climate produces an elegant, Burgundian style of Pinot Noir that offers balanced acidity, a dark garnet color, silky tannins and full, rich dark-fruit character.  This wine shows attractive aromas and flavors of ripe black cherries, moderate oak toast and hints of earth.

Celler de Capçanes 2011 Mas Picosa (Montsant, Spain)    $12.99
Mas Picosa is a blend of organically grown old vine Garnacha (70%) and Syrah (30%).  It shows beautifully concentrated dark fruit flavors of ripe blackberry and black cherry.  Lush and velvety, the wine has a satisfying plummy richness and very smooth texture.

Catena 2012 Vista Flores Malbec (Mendoza, Argentina)    $15.99
The grapes for this wine were sourced from the high-altitude Vista Flores region of Mendoza. True to the varietal, it’s a juicy, mouth-filling red with deep, dark flavors of plum, currant and blackberry.  Complex pepper and spice accents enliven the finish.

Martin Ray 2012 Merlot (Napa Valley)    $21.99
This Napa Merlot offers aromas of exotic spice, ripe plums and toasty vanillin oak, followed by a supple palate packed with flavors of dark plums and black cherries with overtones of dark chocolate.  A long, clean finish completes the package.

Miraflores 2011 Zinfandel (El Dorado County)    $27.99
This is a dense, layered and complex Sierra Foothills Zin that’s packed with deep, rich fruit. Scents of black currant and bittersweet chocolate lead to complex black cherry, fresh anise and white pepper flavors.  The tannins are ripe but remain powerful through a lengthy finish.

NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:

King Estate 2013 Pinot Gris (Oregon)    $16.99
This is a vibrant and delicious Oregon Pinot Gris with a fine mineral edge.  A fragrant nose of fresh Bosc pears, peaches and orange blossoms, reminiscent of a fragrant citrus grove, leads into a flavorful palate of lush white peach and citrus zest.  The wine is juicy, rich and elegant, with crisp acidity.

Miraflores Tintoretto (El Dorado County)    $49.99
This Sierra Foothills wine is made in the same way as the classic Amarones wines of Northern Italy, using only premium, hand-selected grapes that are air-dried for up to three months before pressing. The result is an incredibly rich, deep, flavorful and satisfying red; a unique California take on an Italian classic.

The Bruery Cuivre Anniversary Ale (Orange County)    $29.99
Cuivre (French for copper) is The Bruery’s 7th Anniversary ale, brewed as an English-style ‘old ale’ and then blended using the solera method. A portion of each year’s anniversary ales is saved in barrels and blended in with the next year’s production, providing greater complexity and depth of character.  It has deep, rich, complex flavors of dark fruits, vanilla, oak and burnt sugar.

Cheers!
