Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
This year, the Fourth of July falls on Tuesday of next week, meaning most folks will enjoy a nice long holiday weekend (as I expect a lot of people will be taking Monday the 3rd off). If you are heading out of town in search of cooler climes, have a great holiday weekend (and drive safe!) If you’re staying around town through the Fourth, be sure to stop by the Wine Cellar and check out our great selection of fine wines and craft beers for your Independence Day get-togethers. And sample this week’s wine selections while you’re here!
THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:
Giesen 2016 Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough, New Zealand) $9.99
The Giesen 2016 is lively and refreshing, a textbook Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. It has an intense bouquet of citrus fruits and freshly picked herbs. Crisp and dry on the palate, this delivers pure, deliciously tangy flavors of passionfruit, grapefruit and lime.
Di Majo Norante 2015 Sangiovese Terre degli Osci (Molise, Italy) $12.99
A blackberry and floral-laden nose edged with spice and herbal tones leads to juicy dark cherry flavors carried on firm tannins. It’s medium-bodied, with a clean finish. A balanced and enjoyable red, this will pair well with just about anything on the table.
Le Cirque 2011 Vin Rouge (Côtes Catalanes, France) $15.99
Le Cirque is from the Côtes Catalanes, a premier region within the Languedoc-Roussillon appellation of south France. A blend of Grenache, Carignan, Syrah and Mourvedre, it’s a big and bold red, with smoky, spicy black cherry, cassis and garrigue aromas and flavors.
Charles Smith 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon (Columbia Valley) $16.99
This Cabernet was sourced from Goose Ridge and Frenchman Hills Vineyards. The wine offers immediate appeal with fresh scents of blackberry, black currant and licorice on the nose. The flavors are rich and ripe, with pleasant, light-grained tannins providing support.
Morgan 2013 G17 Syrah (Monterey County) $18.99
Morgan’s G17 is a blend of 78% Syrah, 11% Tempranillo and 11% Grenache. Coffee cake, blackberry and cherry blossom aromas jump from the glass. The wine is medium-bodied, with silky tannins, offering a savory palate of spice, sage and black cherry fruit.
Director’s Cut 2012 Cinema Red (Sonoma County) $34.99
Made with fruit sourced from the Dry Creek, Alexander and Knight’s Valley, Cinema is a wine with superb balance and concentration. The nose has a rich fragrance of blackberry pie, cassis, cherries, cigar box, vanilla and dried flowers followed by lush layers of fruit set upon a velvety palate. Nuances of ripe cherries, dark chocolate and sweet, smoky oak are elevated by a long and spicy finish.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
Tenuta Guado al Tasso 2015 Il Bruciato (Tuscany, Italy) $27.99
Il Bruciato is a ‘Super-Tuscan’ blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, made with fruit sourced from Tuscany’s coastal Maremma region. Bright cherry and currant flavors are enhanced by a touch of cedar. Smooth tannins and a fresh finish complete this elegant Tuscan red.
Coeur Clémentine 2016 Rosé (Côtes de Provence, France) $14.99
This rosé is a blend of Grenache, Cinsault, Tibouren (a Provençal rarity) and a splash of Mourvedre. It pours a clear, very light salmon-pink color with tantalizing raspberry fruit and woody herb aromas, edged by a racy quality that cuts a swathe though its fine, silky texture. A crisply refreshing wine, it finishes dry and tangy with white pepper and floral notes.
Shannon Ridge 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon (Lake County) $12.99
The Shannon Ridge High Elevation Collection Cabernet offers raspberry and dried cranberry characters plus notes of pepper and allspice. The lengthy, savory finish has hints of cedar, framing abundant dark fruit and toasted oak.
Royal Tokaji Wine Co. 2015 Late Harvest (Tokaj, Hungary) $22.99
RTWC’s Late Harvest is made from the native Hungarian varietals Furmint, Hárslevelű and Muscat de Lunel. The wine exudes pure scents of dried apricots, oranges, jasmine, and gingersnaps. It’s lush and honeyed in the mouth, with vivid flavors of apricot marmalade and citrus peel.
Cheers!
