Greetings from the Wine Cellar:

Just a quick announcement this week with regard to the upcoming Independence Day holiday:  the Old Town Wine Cellar will be CLOSED Saturday, the 4th of July.  But the Cellar will be open all this week for our normal hours except Saturday, featuring of course our daily wine tastings.  We can’t offer fireworks or barbecue, but we have some really good wines to sample.  Stop by before the holiday gets here and have a taste, or a glass!

THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:

King Estate 2013 Pinot Gris (Oregon)    $16.99
This is a vibrant, delicious Oregon Pinot Gris with a fine mineral edge.  A fragrant nose of fresh Bosc pear, peach and orange blossom, reminiscent of a fragrant citrus grove, leads to a flavorful palate of lush white peach and citrus zest.  The wine is juicy, rich and elegant, with crisp acidity.

Hahn Winery 2013 Pinot Noir (Monterey County)    $14.99
Hahn Pinot Noir is vibrant yet elegant, with a bouquet of strawberry, spice and floral aromas. Pleasant plum and dark cherry flavors flow across the palate, mingling with touches of black pepper and oak. The ripe fruit is balanced by zesty, ‘cool-climate’ acidity and smooth tannins.

Once Upon a Vine 2012 Big Bad Red Blend (California)    $11.99
The Big Bad Red Blend is plenty big, and it’s not bad at all!  It’s a rich, smooth and very fruit-forward California blend, with enough tannins and complexity to keep it interesting.  It’s the perfect red for a simple dinner, and a very satisfying pour by the glass anytime.

St. Hallet 2013 Faith Shiraz (Barossa Valley, Australia)    $15.99
St. Hallet’s 2013 Faith offers vibrant black cherry, raspberry and dark chocolate flavors, balanced with smooth, supple tannins and a hint of vanillin oak.  The overall palate effect is of rich, ripe dark fruit and a fine generosity of flavor – a classic Barossa Shiraz.

Vigna delle Monache 2006 Salice Salentino Riserva (Puglia, Italy)    $22.99
The baking hot sun of the Italian south, the ‘heel’ of Italy, comes through in this rich and rustic dry red, with its smoky nose and robust palate of stewed dark plums, figs and spice.  The Salice Salentino is a traditional Puglian red, vinted from the native Negroamaro grape.

J. Lohr 2012 Hilltop Cabernet Sauvignon (Paso Robles)    $27.99
The Hilltop Cabernet is always one of Paso’s finest, year after year.  Varietal fruit aromas of ripe black plums and violets are enhanced by a French oak barrel character of hazelnut and dark chocolate. A dense, yet approachable mid-palate is followed by wonderfully intense fruit on the finish.

NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:

Cambria 2012 Syrah, Tepusquet Vineyard (Santa Maria Valley)    $21.99
Cambria’s Tepusquet Vineyard has sandy, loamy soils that restrict vine vigor and help increase concentration, enhancing varietal character and creating more robust flavors. This Syrah offers deep dark fruit and cinnamon spice on the nose.  Rich mocha, blackberry and plum fruit flavors mingle with spice and earth notes on the palate.

Matanzas Creek 2013 Sauvignon Blanc (Sonoma County)    $16.99
This Sauvignon Blanc is zesty, juicy and mouthwatering; vibrant with citrus, guava and passionfruit flavors, laced with a fine mineral edge.  The ripe, vivid fruit flavors persist all through a lingering, expressive finish. It’s a perfect hot-weather quaffing wine.

Freemark Abbey 2012 Merlot (Napa Valley)    $26.99
This cross-Napa Valley red consists of 85% Merlot blended with other Bordeaux grapes.  Just 21% new oak barrels were used, so the fruit component dominates.  A silken texture coupled with fine richness of flavor provides a profile that delivers from the initial sip and continues on the palate for a lengthy finish.

Cheers!
