Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
All this week, Tuesday August 7th through Saturday the 11th, The Yuma Art Center here in the heart of Historic Downtown (254 S. Main Street) and The Humane Society of Yuma present Pawblo Pawcasso, an Animal Art Experience. It’s a unique dog-friendly exhibition that will feature artwork just for canines, pet photography and a silent art auction going on in the North and South Galleries as part of the “Pet-ropolitan Museum of Art”, with 100% of the proceeds to go directly to benefit the Humane Society. Leashed dogs are welcome to attend with their family throughout the week. A public reception will take place Friday, August 10th at 6:00 PM, with the silent auction closing at 8:00 PM. For more info, call 446-0243.
THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:
Feudo Maccari 2016 Grillo (Sicily, Italy) $14.99 A grape varietal native to Sicily, Grillo offers zesty aromas of citrus, pear and white flowers. The palate displays nectarine, pineapple and yellow apple with vibrant acidity, and a subtle hazelnut accent enlivens the brisk, refreshing finish.
Hearst Ranch Winery 2017 Julia Rosé (Paso Robles) $16.99 The Julia Rose is particularly stunning in the glass. The salmon color heralds bright raspberry, rose petal and peach flavors, with bright acidity that delivers a nicely balanced mouthfeel. A steely mineral edge extends the clean, zesty finish.
Vigneti del Salento 2015 I Muri Negroamaro (Puglia, Italy) $12.99 The baking hot sun of the Italian south comes through in this rich and earthy red, with its smoky nose and robust palate redolent of dark plums, stewed figs and peppery spice. Negroamaro, an ancient native varietal in Puglia, makes a fantastic pairing with richly flavored Italian cuisine.
Skyfall Vineyard 2015 Red Blend (Columbia Valley) $15.99 A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, this has a blueberry and sweet oak bouquet with a touch of black currant. The palate is medium in body, nicely balanced and packed with fruit, with flavors of ripe blackberry and black cherry, toasty oak and a hint of dark chocolate.
Hearst Ranch Winery 2015 Three Sisters Cuvée (Paso Robles) $21.99 This Paso blend of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre offers plentiful aromas of strawberry and toffee, along with subtle floral and pepper-spice notes. The flavor profile displays ripe dark cherry, strawberry and toasty vanilla flavors supported by refreshing acidity.
Quilt 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) $39.99 Quilt is so named for the sourcing of its fruit from a patchwork of premium Napa vineyards in the Oakville, St. Helena, Atlas Peak, Calistoga and Howell Mountain AVA’s. Aged in French oak for 20 months, this wine offers a richness and depth of flavor that’s truly remarkable.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
Bootleg Wine Works 2014 Bootleg Red (Napa Valley) $37.99 A blend of Syrah, Merlot and Petite Sirah, the Bootleg Red features a deep garnet-purple color and a lovely bouquet of kirsch, crushed blackberries and red currants, plus touches of black pepper, baking spice and garrigue. A full-bodied palate offers fresh, juicy black fruit flavors with a nice peppery accent and rounded tannins, finishing on a spicy note.
Route Stock 2015 Sauvignon Blanc (Napa Valley) $17.99 Aromas of figs, kiwi, grapefruit and wildflowers jump from the glass. The palate offers flavors of kiwi, toasted pine nuts, figs, ruby grapefruit and lemongrass. A subtle creaminess from aging in neutral oak balances the citrus character of the varietal, finishing clean and refreshing.
Freeman Vineyards 2013 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) $29.99 The 2013 Freeman Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir displays a medium garnet hue and has a true Sonoma Coast nose of fresh Mirabelle plums, grilled herbs and seasoned oak. Zesty acidity on the refreshing palate complements its ripe fruit, with no appearance of the hard tannins that are often found in this cooler growing region.
Cheers!
