Greetings from the Wine Cellar:

There’s always something interesting going on in Historic Downtown to help get you through the downhill side of another toasty Yuma summer!  This Saturday, August 29th, it’s lyric soprano and international opera star Jena Carpenter showing off her vocal artistry in concert at the Historic Yuma Theatre (254 S. Main St). The performance is a fundraising event to promote higher education opportunities for young women in the Yuma community. The concert will go from 6:00 to 8:30 PM, and will include a 45-minute intermission featuring raffles, a silent auction and vocal performances by aspiring local artists, with wine and hors d’oeuvres available.  Presale tickets are just $10 (available at www.yumashowtickets.com), $15 at the door and $25 for VIP seating.  For more info, call 928-276-3408.

THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:

Miraflores 2014 Pinot Grigio (Sierra Foothills)    $17.99
This is a crisp and refreshing Pinot Grigio with a beautiful floral nose, revealing hints of honeyed melon, orange rind and white pear.  Juicy apple, white pear and citrus flavors come through vividly on the palate, with a rich and creamy undertone and a hint of dried herbs.

Sartori 2011 Pinot Nero (Delle Venezie, Italy)    $12.99
This Northern Italian Pinot Noir shows a clear, bright ruby in the glass, with a violet edge.  The bouquet offers scents of black cherries, clove and chocolate, with a touch of spicy vanilla.  The palate is dry and well-balanced, a good blend of fruit and acidity.

Cryptic 2011 California Red    $14.99
The Cryptic Red is a regional blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes sourced from select vineyards in Amador County, Lodi and Paso Robles.  It’s supple and seductive, with ripe berry and dark cherry flavors plus notes of toasted hazelnuts and vanilla.

Alexander Valley Vineyards 2011 Estate Syrah (Alexander Valley)    $15.99
This Sonoma Syrah has aromas of blueberry, boysenberry and a slight floral note of violets, followed by classic varietal flavors of blackberry jam, black currant and spice accents of cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves.

Marques de Murrieta 2009 Rioja Reserva (Rioja, Spain)    $24.99
On the nose, this Rioja Reserva offers exotic aromas of vanilla, clove and cinnamon. A smooth and velvety palate has abundant dark cherry and black plum fruit flavors, plus exotic hints of fresh earth, tobacco and Indian spice that carry to the finish.

Rombauer 2011 Merlot (Napa Valley)    $29.99
Rombauer Merlot offers a ripe, juicy core of blackberry, plum and dark cherry fruit.  Firm and dry yet elegantly styled, it shows elements of rich spice that accent the fruit and add complexity.  The round, soft finish carries a light accent of vanilla.

NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:

Black Stallion 2012 Pinot Noir (Los Carneros)    $22.99
Earthy and savory, this Carneros Pinot is soft and velvety on the palate, entirely inviting and mellow. The flavors are marked by delicious black cherry and raspberry fruit, plus complex notes of herbs and fennel.  A cool minerality and fresh acidity lead this to a long, layered finish.

Barossa Valley Estate 2013 Grenache-Syrah-Mourvedre (Barossa Valley, Australia)    $17.99
This “GSM” is rich, dense and focused, a chewy mouthful of plum, raspberry and spice flavors on a velvety texture.  A fine example of a “Rhone-style” blend from Down Under, offering balance and finesse while still retaining the juicy exuberance Aussie reds are renowned for.

Oro di Milano Riserva Speciale Amber Ale (Milan, Italy)    $9.99
This Italian double-malt beer pours an amber-brown color with an off-white head.  The aromas include fruit, caramel and a yeasty spiciness.  A rich, malty and slightly sweet palate offers hints of apples and licorice, with a deliciously spicy finish.

Cheers!
