Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
This coming Saturday and Sunday, January 15th – 16th, the Yuma Art Center will present an “alfresco fine arts festival” in Historic Downtown’s scenic Gateway Park: Art in the Park. Scheduled from 10AM to 5PM both days, the festival will feature local and regional artists displaying their diverse artworks in the park alongside the banks of the meandering Colorado River. Admission is just $1.00 with kids six & under free; leashed dogs are welcome.
The festival will feature live music and theatrical performances, lawn games, food vendors and more. Enjoy a leisurely stroll through the park, partake in a mimosa or glass of wine, enjoy the artistic creations and chat with the artists. It’s a great part of the winter season’s events lineup in Historic Downtown – don’t miss it!
FEATURED WINES THIS WEEK
Tenuta Fratelli Povero 2019 Roero Arneis (Piedmont, Italy) $15.99
Arneis is an ancient grape varietal that originated in northern Italy’s Piedmont region. It makes a refreshingly crisp and lightly floral white with bright flavors of pears, apricot and citrus. The finish is bracingly clean and dry, with a tangy minerality.
J. Wilkes 2019 Pinot Noir (Santa Maria Valley) $24.99
Aged 10 months in neutral French oak, this wine combines bright acidity with an earthy core and a smooth texture, showing a depth and complexity that stands out. Dusty cherry-cocoa tannins lead to earth and spices, as floral tones weave throughout this vividly expressive Pinot.
Spellbound 2019 Petite Sirah (California) $14.99
Once one of the most widely planted grapes in California, Petite is famous for its inky color, lush texture and wild berry character. This one is reminiscent of a fresh baked cherry cobbler, with mocha and coffee accents added in.
Ruffino 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva Ducale (Tuscany, Italy) $22.99
This Classico offers aromas of crushed dark cherries along with undertones of coffee and leather on the nose. The palate is fresh and balanced, with silky tannins wrapped around a fruit-filled core of ripe black cherry and red berries, ending with a pleasantly spicy finish.
Frog’s Leap 2019 Zinfandel (Napa Valley) $32.99
Frog’s Leap 2019 Zinfandel is crafted in a classic “field blend” style with additions of Petite Sirah and Carignane to the blend. It offers tremendous aromatic intensity, alongside rich and polished flavors.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS
Opaque 2017 Petit Verdot (Paso Robles) $29.99
After aging in a mix of French & American oak barrels for 24 months, this Petit Verdot reveals rich flavors of ripe dark plums and currants, along with accents of vanilla and dark chocolate. Structured tannins provide solid texture and depth on the long finish.
Monchhof 2019 Estate Riesling (Mosel Valley, Germany) $19.99
This Riesling opens with lush aromas of limes, apples, peaches and pineapples, followed by deep flavors of ripe tropical fruits, peaches and just a hint of honey. Refreshing acidity balances a fine, just ‘off-dry’ finish that lingers on the palate.
Banshee 2018 Mordecai Red (California) $18.99
An “everything they could get their hands on” blend, this wine is 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Zinfandel, 15% Malbec, 20% Petite Sirah, 5% Merlot, 5% Carignan and 5% Grenache from vineyards in the Anderson Valley, Sonoma County, Napa Valley and Mendocino County. The result is dark fruits galore, framed by savory toasted oak.
Julius Echter Weissbier Dunkel (Würzburg, Germany) $5.99
This ‘Dunkelweizen’ (dark wheat beer) pours a lustrous dark brown. The nose shows a mix of wheat, bananas, yeasty bread and spice. The flavors mirror the aromas, with a nice malty backbone and a touch of citrus. The texture is smooth and creamy, with a pleasant degree of tongue-tingling carbonation.
Cheers!
