Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
This Friday evening, November 17th from 5:00 to 9:00 PM, the North End Art Walk strolls back into town with another fun and eclectic celebration of local artists. Billed as an evening of fine art, music and culture in our Historic Downtown setting, the Art Walk is a sidewalk-style art sale with the artists displaying and selling their works in and outside downtown merchants and property owners. Over 50 artists will be participating, representing many forms of media including ceramics, jewelry, prints and canvases, calligraphy, photography, glass and mixed media. The evening will also feature musical performances. For more info, call 373-5202.
And don’t forget, this Saturday evening, November 18th, the Foothills Optimist Club holds their Wine Tasting Fundraiser in the beautiful outdoor gardens of the Sanguinetti House Museum (240 S. Madison Ave.) from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. This benefit raises funds for the group’s ongoing youth programs. I’ve selected some very nice wines for the occasion, and they always put out a great spread of appetizers, so give Mary Ann a call at 580-7293 to order tickets (cost is just $25 per person, or $20 for groups of four or more); they can also be purchased at the door. We hope to see you there!
THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:
Ferrari Carano 2016 Fumé Blanc (Sonoma County) $14.99 This Sonoma Sauvignon Blanc is vibrant, lively and stylish, with a zesty mix of orange rind, fig and grapefruit flavors, accented by subtle herb tones. Hints of lemon blossom make a pleasant backdrop to the bold, racy fruit. The finish is bright, clean and refreshing.
Saracco 2015 Pinot Noir (Piedmont, Italy) $17.99 Made with grapes grown in the foothills of the Alps in northern Italy, this Pinot Noir is light, fresh and savory, showing a delicate bouquet of dark fruits and spices. On the palate, true varietal flavors of black cherry and currant emerge on a soft, silky frame.
The Federalist 2014 Honest Red (North Coast) $14.99 The Honest Red is a mix of 55% Merlot, 30% Zinfandel and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, sourced from premium growing regions in Northern California. The wine offers a soft and round mouthfeel with a medley of rich dark fruit flavors and a lightly spicy finish.
Alamos 2014 Selección Malbec (Mendoza, Argentina) $18.99 Alamos Selección Malbec offers an enticing nose of ripe blueberry fruit with hints of violets and sweet spice. The mouthfeel is full and rich, with rich blackberry and cherry fruit flavors and a slight black pepper kick. The finish is smooth and silky, lingering nicely.
Benziger 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma County) $19.99 Softly textured, rich in flavor and moderate in tannins, this is a supple and full-bodied Cabernet with generous flavors of berries, cedar, green olives and dark chocolate. A light degree of toast from oak aging gives additional complexity to a polished finish.
Tres Sabores 2013 ¿Por qué no? (Napa Valley) $24.99 ¿Por que no? is the quintessential party, picnic, barbecue or bistro red, thanks to the spirited joy it brings to the palate. A blend of 56% Zinfandel and 31% Petite Sirah plus splashes of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, it’s a zesty, fruity and very tasty quaffer.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
Bravium 2015 Pinot Noir (Anderson Valley) $32.99 This Pinot Noir offers a vivacious and exotic bouquet of strawberry rhubarb, rose petals, raspberry, wild berry, crushed rock, smoke and cherry. The plush palate delivers berry patch flavors edged with orange peel notes, with a mineral-driven finish. Bright acidity, fine-grained tannins, and classic Anderson Valley character all combine to create a superb Pinot Noir.
Hartford Court 2015 Chardonnay (Russian River Valley) $22.99 This Sonoma Chard is wonderfully vibrant, offering a full-bodied mix of tangerine, lime, nectarine and pear flavors that are intense, complex, layered and cleansing. The wine has enough creamy oak to add a satisfying touch of richness, but the emphasis is on a focused and pure core of ripe orchard fruits.
Podernuovo a Palazzone 2011 Therra (Tuscany, Italy) $22.99 Therra is a Tuscan blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Montepulciano. The result is a complex yet highly satisfying Tuscan red with a vividly fruity character of dark cherry, blackberry and currant, along with intriguing hints of spice, tobacco and cedar. A nice hint of balsamic accents the rich and lingering finish.
Cheers!
