Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
This Friday, November 20th, The North End Art Walk strolls back into Historic Downtown Yuma with another fun and eclectic evening of experiencing the best of local Yuma artists. It’s a recurring event involving local artists and downtown merchants and property owners, wherein up to 50 artists team up with downtown businesses to create showplaces for their artistic creations. In addition to all sorts of unique art objects, from paintings to jewelry to ceramics, the Art Walk will feature performances of live music along the way, plus light hors d’oeuvres and beverages. The event kicks off at 5 PM Friday and continues until 9 PM. For more info, call 928-580-7417.
THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING (Tuesday through Friday):
Tuscan Sun 2013 Pensiero Pinot Grigio (Alto Adige, Italy) $13.99
A light green lustre runs through the radiant straw-yellow color of this wine, and the nose is rich in sweet pear and apple. An excellent balance gives this good length and structure. It’s fruity yet fully dry and clean on the palate, with a pleasantly tangy, mineral-tinged finish.
Tuscan Sun 2013 Tondo Tondo (Tuscany, Italy) $13.99
Tondo Tondo is 100% Sangiovese. The color is bright red, with a broad, intense and fruity nose. On the palate this offers ripe red berry, cherry and floral tones that are lightly herbaceous. It’s harmonious and balanced, with a distinctly Tuscan taste – a wonderful wine for sharing with friends and family during the holidays!
Goose Ridge 2011 G3 Red Wine Blend (Columbia Valley) $14.99
Goose Ridge Estate is a family-owned and operated winery dedicated to producing handcrafted, limited production wines from only estate-grown fruit. The G3 Blend is a classic Bordeaux-style compilation of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot along with other red varietals.
St. Hallet 2013 Faith Shiraz (Barossa Valley, Australia) $15.99
St. Hallet’s 2013 Faith offers vibrant black cherry, raspberry and dark chocolate flavors, balanced with smooth, supple tannins and a hint of vanillin oak. The overall palate effect is of rich, ripe dark fruit and a fine generosity of flavor – a classic Barossa Shiraz.
Black Stallion 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) $22.99
This full-bodied Napa Cab offers aromas and flavors of blackberry, plum, red currant and cedar. The rich fruit is accented with a savory array of spice and floral tones like nutmeg, ginger, lavender, vanilla cream and espresso bean. Smooth and well-integrated tannins carry to a lingering, elegant finish.
Francis Coppola 2012 Pitagora (Sonoma County) $24.99
Pitagora is robust, full-bodied and dripping with ripe dark fruit. Flavors of blackberries, plums and black currants are enlivened by smoky/earthy notes and fragrant spice hints. A velvety entry on the palate and a generous tannin structure frames the bold, spicy fruit.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
Marcus Molitor 2011 Riesling Spätlese, Wehlener Sonnenuhr (Mosel Valley, Germany) $29.99
This is a rich and elegant Riesling sourced from a renowned Mosel Valley vineyard. It shows alluring aromas of pineapples and apricots on the nose, with equally intense and pure flavors on the lush palate. It’s all balanced by finely etched acidity on a crisp finish.
Chiantari 2010 Nero d’Avola (Sicily, Italy) $26.99
This native Sicilian red has bright aromas of black currant and boysenberry infused with subtle nuances of mint. In the mouth it’s a richly fruited wine with fresh upfront ripe dark fruit flavors then earthy, savory, leathery notes kicking in. Firm yet velvet-coated tannins support this flavorful red.
Woodwork 2013 Pinot Noir (Central Coast) $14.99
The Woodwork 2013 Pinot Noir shows a rich varietal character complemented by a precisely applied dose of French oak. The palate shows upfront juicy cranberry and plum flavors with fine tannins and a complex edge of smoke and spice notes.
Cañada Guadelupe #159 Golden Ale (Ensenada, Mexico) $9.99
A Mexican craft beer from nearby Baja California, the #159 is styled after a Belgian golden ale, with the pale golden color derived from Pilsener malts. It’s fermented in stainless steel and is then fermented a second time in the bottle. It shows complex touches of clove and white flowers, plus a splash of citrus.
Cheers!
