11/26/2013 Newsletter
Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
As I mentioned in last week’s Newsletter, this Wednesday, November 27th, the Wine Cellar will host a special pre-Thanksgiving tasting of new vintages from Miraflores Winery of El Dorado County, California, owned by Yuma’s own Dr. Victor Alvarez. I’ve had a chance to taste some of these wines already, and I can say they are impressive. Dr. Alvarez will of course be on hand to talk about the wines as well as his winery and the Sierra Foothills viticultural area, a region that is rapidly gaining acclaim for its wines.
The Old Town Wine Cellar will be closed Thursday, November 28th for Thanksgiving Day. We’ll be open for business as usual Friday and Saturday, so don’t hesitate to stop by and get an early start on your Christmas shopping. Due to the holiday, we won’t have an official Friday wine tasting this week, but there will be wines available by the glass Friday afternoon and evening. Come in and join us if you’re in the Old Town neighborhood!
NEW ARRIVALS:
Marchesi di Barolo 2007 Barolo Tradizione (Piedmont, Italy) $54.99
This is a sumptuous and supple yet elegantly styled Barolo, with gorgeous layers of cherry, woody spice, floral tones and dried herbs, all in superb harmony. The palate displays fine depth and excellent overall balance. A great example of Nebbiolo, from a notable vintage.
Cloudy Bay 2012 Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough, New Zealand) $29.99
This is classic Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc, juicy and mouthwatering; vibrant with ripe citrus, guava and passionfruit flavors that are laced with a mineral edge. Deliciously vivid fruit flavors persist all through a lingering, expressive, bracingly clean finish.
Trivento 2011 Amado Sur Malbec (Mendoza, Argentina) $14.99
Trivento’s Amado Sur Malbec begins with an aromatic, enticing nose of jammy black fruit and baking spices. The palate offers plenty of rich, luscious fruit with a touch of licorice and even a hint of chocolate. It ends with a lengthy finish full of fruit and smoky spice.
Jacob’s Creek 2012 Red Blend (South Australia) $9.99
The Jacob’s Creek Red is a mixture of 66% Shiraz along with 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Grenache, and 4% Petite Verdot. Light woodspice with hints of mint lead to candied red fruit scents. The wine is soft and silky in the mouth, with plenty of ripe black fruit and a touch of dark chocolate. A great party red!
Oro di Milano Doppio Malto Premium Ale (Milan, Italy) $7.99
Oro di Milano’s Doppio Malto is a rich and fruity Italian golden ale brewed only with pure water, select barley and hops. It’s fresh, clean and crisp on the palate, with a nice malty character and touches of honey and caramel that last through the finish.
Cheers, and happy Thanksgiving Day!
