THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:
Starmont 2015 Chardonnay (Carneros) $17.99 Starmont Chardonnay is crafted to enjoy with food or simply by the glass. The 2015 is pale gold in color with aromas of citrus, apple and vanilla. The soft entry leads into a mid-palate with a bright freshness, and plenty of acidity. Flavors of apples and pears along with citrus, mineral and subtle toast accents mingle on a refreshingly crisp, clean finish.
Greg Norman Estates 2015 Pinot Noir (Santa Barbara County) $14.99 Santa Barbara County’s coastal climate of sun, cool sea breezes and fog makes the perfect place to grow Pinot Noir with concentrated fruit flavors. This has floral aromas and rich flavors of black cherries and plums, with a smooth, soft and savory finish.
Angeline 2016 Reserve Merlot (Paso Robles) $14.99 A quintessential Paso Robles Merlot, this opens with flavors of fresh blackberries, elderberries and dark plums that lead into black cherry on the mid-palate. Balanced with the rich fruit are soft, supple tannins, backed by complex notes of chicory and clove, finishing with a hint of cocoa dust.
Famiglia Pasqua 2015 Passimento Rosso (Veneto, Italy) $17.99 Essentially a turbo-charged Valpolicella, this is made with partially dried grapes to concentrate flavors prior to fermentation. It contains some Merlot in addition to the indigenous Corvina and Croatina grapes to add smoothness. The result is a rich, succulent wine with flavors of cherry jam, plums and spice that are savory and dry.
Rutherford Ranch 2015 Two Range Red (Napa Valley) $22.99 The Two Range Red is a unique Napa blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Petit Verdot. The nose offers bright aromas of red raspberries and spices, and the palate follows with abundant flavors of juicy cherries and wild berries, framed with silky tannins.
Mollydooker 2016 The Boxer Shiraz (South Australia) $29.99 The Boxer is a rich and complex Shiraz, with a mix of sweet ripe fruit and powerful tannins. It delivers an effusive mouthful of raspberry, plum and peppery-spice flavors that are vivid and lingering. But the density on the palate doesn’t get in the way of all the fruit and spice, and the finish just keeps on going…
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
Route Stock 2014 Route 99W Pinot Noir (Willamette Valley) $22.99 The Route 99W opens with scents of sweet Oregon blackberries and Rainier cherries, plus hints of cedar forest and a light note of rose petal. The palate offers rich, vivid flavors of freshly picked wild berries and exotic Asian spices, yet the wine displays elegance and balance.
Domaine Carneros 2014 Brut Sparkling Wine (Carneros) $29.99 This focused and elegant sparkler exudes aromas of citrus blossom, pear and fresh summer herbs, plus a light touch of toast. The palate offers a fruit-filled array of lime zest, lemon meringue, green apple and a touch of green tea. A blend of 62% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay and 3% Pinot Gris.
ÆRENA2016 Cabernet Sauvignon (Lake County) $19.99 The fruit for this Cabernet was grown in the Mayacamas mountains north of St. Helena, prime territory for producing concentrated, intense reds. The nose opens with scents of blackberry, plum, fig, cigar obacco and vanilla. Smooth on the entry, this medium-bodied wine offers a rich, lingering finish.
Samuel Smith 2018 Winter Welcome Ale (Yorkshire, England) $6.99 This limited edition seasonal beer is brewed for the says and long nights of winter. The full body comes from fermentation in traditional stone “Yorkshire squares,” and the luxurious malt character is balanced against Fuggle and Golding hops. The result is a complex and satisfying ale that merits contemplation before an open fire.
Cheers!
