Greetings from the Wine Cellar:

In case you’ve forgotten, this coming Sunday, February 14^th, is Valentine’s Day. Don’t forget a card, of course, but you really need more. There’s nothing wrong with flowers or candy, but at the Old Town Wine Cellar we think wine is really the way to go (surprise!) We have a lot of great choices that will make your valentine see that you really care – Champagnes, awesome dessert wines, great Napa Cabernets, or whatever you think he or she might really find appealing. There’s a lot to choose from here in the Cellar and you have all week to get down here and make a selection. And you can enjoy a flight or a glass while you do – we hope to see you soon!

FEATURED WINES THIS WEEK

Schieferkopf 2017 Silvaner Trocken-Sec (Franken, Germany) $19.99

The German Silvaner varietal makes a dry white known for its racy mineral character. On the nose, floral scents of acacia blossoms open up to fruit-laden aromas of quince and pear. The palate is broad and supple, with fine acidity and a crisp, delicious freshness. Notes of white flowers echo on a brisk, clean finish.

Torres 2015 Crianza Altos Ibéricos (Rioja, Spain) $15.99

Torres’ Altos Ibéricos Crianza is ruby red, with a garnet edge. The nose is redolent of ripe dark fruit plus hints of spice and leather. On the palate, cherry and brambly berry fruit is edged with complex spice and oak accents.

Corte Fiore 2017 Appassimento (Abruzzo, Italy) $15.99

Appassimento is a traditional Italian style of winemaking in which grapes are partially dried before pressing, resulting in wines with added richness, flavor and complexity. Made from the native Montepulciano d’Abruzzo varietal, this offers aromas of ripe black cherries and a palate full of juicy dark fruit flavors.

Chateau de Lagarde 2019 Le Petit Cuvée Nature (Bordeaux, France) $19.99

Cuvée Nature does not utilize pesticides, sulfites, chemical fertilizers or any oak, but it still has plenty of flavor. Inexpensive Merlots tend not to be too exciting, and ones that stand out generally have oak aging to thank. But this Bordeaux tastes bright and alive. Maybe there’s something to this “Natural Wine” movement after all…

Kuleto Estate 2016 India Ink Red (Lake County/Napa Valley) $22.99

A mixture of Petite Sirah, Zinfandel and Merlot, this wine is made for pure indulgence. India Ink is richly flavored and hedonistic. On the nose, lush scents of ripe red fruits and spice are framed with hints of smoke and earth. Vivid black fruit flavors on the palate are complemented by hints of black pepper, cedar and dark chocolate.

NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS

Whitehall Lane 2017 Rassi Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma Valley) $24.99

Whitehall Lane’s Rassi Vineyard in Sonoma Valley is situated on the western flank of the Mayacamas Mountains. A predominantly gravelly/sandy loam site, it has excellent free-draining soils that are ideal for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. This offers exquisite balance with abundantly ripe fruit.

Tenuta di Nozzole 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva (Tuscany, Italy) $22.99

This Classico offers aromas of crushed dark cherries along with undertones of coffee and leather on the nose. The palate is fresh and balanced, with silky tannins wrapped around a fruit-filled core of ripe black cherry and raspberry, ending with a pleasantly spicy finish.

Penfolds 2018 Bin 389 Cabernet-Shiraz (South Australia) $59.99

Penfolds Bin 389 is an Australian “Grand Vin”, a selection of the finest lots sourced from the best vineyards. It’s supple, expressive and beautifully refined, showing a fine balance between vibrant acidity and a silky smooth tannic frame. The finish is rich and savory.

Modern Times Brewing Thundera Hazy IPA (San Diego) $4.99

This utterly delightful hazy-boi is loaded with shockingly large quantities of Citra and Idaho 7 hops to produce a swirling vortex of juicy, tropical, citrusy IPA magic. It’s entirely possible your eyes will cry endless tears of joy after this encounters your taste buds!

Cheers!
