Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
This first day of March means the winter season in Yuma is starting to fade away, but thankfully there’s plenty of beautiful weather ahead before the heat of summer is upon us. One result of the passing of the season is that this coming Sunday, March 7th, Visit Yuma will host the last Ag to Art Market here in Downtown from 10AM to 3PM in the parking lot at the Giss Parkway & Madison Avenue roundabout. It’s your last chance to come by and grab farm-fresh produce, local art, handmade jewelry and more. And this Friday, March 5th, will be First Friday in Historic Downtown, with most stores remaining open until 8PM or later, and of course all our downtown eating & drinking establishments will be open, many with expanded outdoor seating available (and the weather is really nice!) So try to make it down here this Friday evening, and be sure to stop by the Wine Cellar when you do!
FEATURED WINES THIS WEEK
St. Huberts 2019 The Stag Chardonnay (Santa Barbara County) $16.99
This opens with lush tropical aromas of fresh peach blossoms, coconut and marzipan. The palate is bright, with a bounty of juicy flavors of passion fruit, pineapple, lemon curd and lime zest, edged with hints of spicy oak and cardamom that lead to a round, creamy finish.
Route Stock 2017 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) $24.99
This Sonoma Coast Pinot opens with scents of sweet blackberries and ripe red cherries, and hints of cedar forest plus a light note of rose petal. The palate offers vivid flavors of freshly picked wild berries and exotic Asian spices, yet the wine displays elegance and balance.
Vigneti del Salento 2017 I Muri Negroamaro (Puglia, Italy) $14.99
The baking hot sun of the Italian south comes through in this rich and earthy red, with its smoky nose and robust palate redolent of dark plums, stewed figs and peppery spice. Negroamaro, an ancient native varietal in Puglia, is a fantastic partner with richly flavored Italian cuisine.
St. Huberts 2017 The Stag Red Blend (Paso Robles) $19.99
The Stag Red has a powerful boysenberry core on the nose, plus holiday baking spice notes of brown sugar, vanilla, nutmeg and clove. In the mouth, it’s rich, round and soft with fine weight and body, offering flavors of ripe juicy dark berries and raspberry custard alongside spice accents and a hint of graham cracker crust.
Paul Mas 2017 Clos des Mures Coteaux du Languedoc (Languedoc, France) $24.99
This South-of-France red has a fragrant nose of blackberry and cassis liqueur, with spice and floral accents chiming in. Ripe plum and blackberry cherry fruit on the front palate is uplifted by mineral and black pepper spice notes, with plush tannins and good balancing acidity. A spicy, warming quality comes on the finish. A blend of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS
Foley-Johnson 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) $44.99
This wine truly reflects the classic terroir of Napa’s renowned Rutherford district. Aromas of dark berry fruits mingle with hints of mocha and espresso, transitioning seamlessly to a wonderfully rich palate. It’s a superb Napa Cabernet that offers superlative length, body and texture.
Saracco 2019 Moscato d’Asti (Piedmont, Italy) $15.99
Saracco is classic Moscato d’Asti, lightly sparkling with alluring aromas of peaches, apricots, honeysuckle, orange blossoms and lemon zest. The soft, creamy texture exhibits a stream of racy bubbles, and overflows with deliciously sweet white peach and melon fruit flavors.
Castillo de Monséran 2016 Garnacha (Cariñena, Spain) $11.99
Spanish Garnacha (aka Grenache) is peppery, zesty and loaded with fresh raspberry fruit. This version exudes fresh aromas of black cherries and crushed raspberries. In the mouth it’s soft and round, with ripe red raspberry and cherry fruit plus a light touch of toasty oak.
Second Chance Brewing Frosty the Hazeman IPA (San Diego) $4.99
Orange, peach, and nectarine aromatics immediately blast the nose on this Hazy. From the first sip, this juice-bomb tastes of tangy citrus and ripe stone fruits. But a subtle bite of bitter, tangy hops lends plenty of balance to this utterly delicious brew!
Cheers!
