Greetings from the Wine Cellar:

Mother’s Day is close at hand, this coming Sunday the 12th of May to be exact.  A good way to show Mom how much you care is by buying her a nice bottle of wine for her special day.  Drop by the Wine Cellar this week and we’ll help you pick one out that will make her Mother’s Day a bit more special.  And of course, while you’re here you can sample this week’s selections…

…and on Sunday, the Yuma Art Center is celebrating Mother’s Day with a special screening of the 1961 Hollywood classic Breakfast at Tiffany’s in the beautiful Historic Yuma Theatre (254 S. Main Street). The event will also feature handcrafted works by local artists, a light brunch buffet and a no-host mimosa & cocktail bar.  The doors open at 11:00 AM, with the showing of the movie to begin at 2:00 PM.  All ages are welcome; tickets are just $5.00 each, $2.50 for students, seniors and military with ID, and FREE for mothers.  Call the Art Center box office for more info (373-5202).   It’s a great way to make mom’s special day a lot more special here in Historic Downtown!

THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING

Prayers for Saints 2017 Washington State Chardonnay    $12.99 This Chardonnay is bright and refreshing, with a touch of softness.  Fragrant scents of peaches, citrus and lightly toasted oak lead to a heavenly mix of fresh pear and melon flavors.  The creamy yet still juicy palate makes this a perfect choice as an apéritif.

Prayers for Sinners 2017 Washington State Red    $12.99 This blend of 90% Syrah and 10% Merlot is for the sinner in all of us – the dark side that  craves a decadently rich and luxurious red.  This brooding wine is deeply layered with blackberry and plum fruit, violet and dark cocoa.  Go ahead, give in to temptation!

Ricasoli 2016 Chianti del Barone (Tuscany, Italy)    $14.99 Barone Ricasoli is the oldest winery in Italy, dating back to the year 1141. Their Chianti del Barone is a classic representation of the wine that Italy is best known for.  A brilliant ruby red, it has attractive aromas and flavors of ripe red fruits plus savory touches of earth and leather.

Chateau Ste. Michelle 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon (Columbia Valley)    $17.99 This Washington State Cabernet is silky and generous, offering a plush mouthful of blackberry and sweet dark cherry fruit.  The fruit is framed with firm but polished tannins, and accented by hints of licorice, roast coffee and dark chocolate.

Beronia 2013 Rioja Reserva (Rioja, Spain)    $22.99 This Reserva is made from carefully selected Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo grapes sourced from older vineyards. It aged 20 months in oak plus 18 more months in the bottle prior to release.  An aromatic nose offers hints of vanilla, clove and cinnamon. The velvety palate delivers abundant berry and plum fruit, with pleasant accents of tobacco and spice.

Bear Flag 2016 Zinfandel (Sonoma County)    $25.99 This Sonoma Zinfandel begins with deep, lush aromas of cherries, blackberries and plums, plus an enticing hint of vanilla.  In the mouth, it’s classic California Zin: big, dense and mouth-filling, packed full of ripe wild berry fruit enlivened with pepper/spice accents.

NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS

TorCalvano 2013 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano (Tuscany, Italy)    $22.99 This Vino Nobile exudes aromas of stewed cherries, plus undertones of coffee and fennel on the nose.  The palate is fresh and balanced, with velvety tannins that are wrapped around a juicy, fruity core.  The black cherry and wild berry fruit flavors offer intriguing hints of spice and earth.

Reinhold Haart 2016 Riesling Kabinett. Piesporter Goldtröpfchen (Mosel Valley, Germany)    $29.99 The Reinhold Haart family has by far the longest winemaking tradition in all of Piesport, making wine there  since the year 1337.  This Piesporter shows classic terroir notes on the palate, enlivened with flavors of white peach.  The finish is a nicely formed blend of crisp acidity edged by stony mineral tones.

Bieler Père et Fils 2016 La Jassine Côtes du Rhône Villages (Rhone Valley, France)    $13.99 This blend of the classic Rhone varietals Grenache and Syrah has a nose of dark cherry fruit and spice aromas framed by classic Provence notes of rosemary, thyme and sage.  A lavish palate of dark berry fruit with a snap of spicy licorice is underscored by soft, round tannins.

Cheers!
