Greetings from the Wine Cellar:

Just a quick reminder to everyone this week that the Old Town Wine Cellar will be closed on Thursday, November 26th, aka Thanksgiving Day.  But we’ll be open as usual both Friday and Saturday, so feel free to come by the Cellar and get a head start on your Christmas shopping after you’ve slept off the Turkey Day feast.  I say it every year – a nice bottle of wine makes the perfect gift!  And of course, other than Thanksgiving Day, this week’s wine selections are available for tasting Tuesday through Friday.  Hope to see you at the Cellar!

THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING (Tuesday through Friday):

Dr. Pauly-Bergweiler 2011 Riesling Kabinett, Wehlener Sonnenuhr (Mosel Valley, Germany)    $24.99
This offers enticing aromas of ripe apricot, peach, pear and floral tones on the nose. The palate is creamy and layered, imparting a fine savory quality to the medley of apple, citrus and pear flavors. An underlying spine of mineral notes and tangy, crisp acidity frame a buoyant finish.

Woodwork 2013 Pinot Noir (Central Coast)    $14.99
The Woodwork 2013 Pinot Noir shows a rich varietal character complemented by a precisely applied dose of French oak.  The palate shows upfront juicy cranberry and plum flavors with fine tannins and a complex edge of smoke and spice notes.

Francis Coppola 2011 Director’s Zinfandel (Mendocino County)    $10.99
The 2011 Director’s Zinfandel offers fine depth, a velvety texture, an array of red and black fruit flavors, exotic spice notes, a touch of pepper and a long, rich finish.  Scents of raspberries, currants and allspice are followed by luscious flavors of cherries, plums and toasted vanilla.

Celler de Capçanes 2011 Costers del Gravet (Montsant, Spain)    $19.99
Costers del Gravet is a rich and full-bodied wine, with characteristic red raspberry and black fruit flavors of the local Garnacha and Samsó grapes.  50% Cabernet Sauvignon contributes structure and elegance, enhanced by aging for 12 months in French oak.

Castiglion del Bosco 2011 Dainero (Tuscany, Italy)    $21.99
This Tuscan blend of Merlot and Sangiovese opens with ripe blackberry and Bing cherry aromas edged by hints of herbs and earth.  A medium-weight palate shows round ripe tannins and a flavorful blend of dark fruits, espresso, tobacco and porcini mushroom.

J. Lohr 2012 Hilltop Cabernet Sauvignon (Paso Robles)    $27.99
The Hilltop Cabernet is always one of Paso’s finest, year after year.  Varietal fruit aromas of ripe black plums and violets are enhanced by a French oak barrel character of hazelnut and dark chocolate. A dense, yet approachable mid-palate is followed by wonderfully intense fruit on the finish.

NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:

Sequoia Grove 2013 Chardonnay (Napa Valley)    $24.99
This Napa Chard offers aromas of guava, tropical fruit and pear followed by crème brulee and marshmallow, with lemon peel and brioche notes in the background.  In the mouth, it balances between delicate and rich, with a clean, bright palate and a mineral edge that frames the creamy finish.

Tuscan Sun 2012 Auguri (Tuscany, Italy)    $17.99
This Tuscan blend of 80% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Syrah opens with hints of violets, spiced fruits and fresh herbs.  The palate is distinguished by an excellent balance of ripe black cherry and plum fruit supported by solid, drying tannins.

J. Lohr 2012 Fog’s Reach Pinot Noir (Arroyo Seco)    $29.99
Fog’s Reach Vineyard is situated in a cool, windy enclave of the Arroyo Seco appellation of Monterey County.  The 2012 vintage offers strawberry, fennel and white tea aromas with a subtle bouquet of toasted puffed pastry.  The prevalence of Dijon clone 667 in the vineyard imparts savory and complex dark fruit flavors on the palate, with sandalwood notes on the finish.

Ninkasi Brewing Vanilla Oatis Oatmeal Stout (Eugene, Oregon)    $5.99
Vanilla Oatis Oatmeal Stout is characterized by a roasted front flavor, smooth rich oats, a touch of dark chocolate and a savory vanilla complexity imparted by whole vanilla beans.  It’s bigger than a traditional stout, with more alcohol and body, and a bit more bitterness for greater balance.

Cheers!
