01/02/2018 Newsletter
Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
The holidays are past and 2018 is here – I hope everyone enjoyed their New Year’s Eve festivities and the New Year’s Day holiday. The Old Town Wine Cellar will keep rolling along into this new year with our weekly wine offerings, so hopefully one of your New Year’s resolutions is to make it down to Historic Downtown more often to partake in the wine tastings and enjoy downtown’s coolest and friendliest atmosphere!
THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:
Oberon 2015 Chardonnay (Los Carneros) $17.99 Oberon Chardonnay is fresh and vibrant, with a full-bodied mix of tangerine, lime, nectarine and pear lavors that are juicy, layered and cleansing. This has enough creamy oak to add a satisfying measure of richness, but the emphasis is on a focused and pure core of ripe orchard fruits.
Stoller Family Estate 2014 Pinot Noir (Dundee Hills, Oregon) $27.99 Crafted exclusively from estate-grown fruit, Stoller’s Dundee Hills Pinot is made in an elegant, approachable style. It has aromas of brambleberry and cherry with floral notes of lilac and violets and understated hints of cola and cinnamon. The palate features a purity of red fruit flavors, bright acidity and polished tannins, with a rich and lasting finish.
Charles Smith 2012 Boom Boom! Syrah (Washington) $12.99 This Washington Syrah opens with bright red currant, plum and spice-box aromas. In the mouth, it’s velvety and round, with a firm tannic structure along with enough snappy acidity to keep its lavish ripe fruit in balance all the way to a satisfying finish.
Masi 2012 Ripasso Campofiorin (Veneto, Italy) $17.99 Campofiorin was created by Masi over 50 years ago to be an affordable mid-point between the pleasant fruitiness of a basic Valpolicella and the complex, raisined richness of Amarone. The fruit-filled nose is perfumed with just a hint of cinnamon. It’s soft, rich and spicy on the palate, with savory flavors of ripe red plums and berries and a pleasant hint of licorice.
Andis 2013 Painted Fields Red (Amador County) $18.99 Painted Fields is a classic Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Merlot. It has a nose of ripe, fresh-picked fruit, mixed with hints of savory kitchen herbs and spices. The palate is all about fresh, ripe wild berry and cherry fruit, accented by notes of cocoa, cinnamon and crushed peppercorns.
J Lohr 2014 Tower Road Petite Sirah (Paso Robles) $22.99 Vivid, pure blackberry-raspberry-blueberry flavors are terrifically ripe, juicy and deeply concentrated. Full-bodied tannins manage to stay in the background to let a delicious core of dark fruit flavors swirl on the palate. Peppery accents enliven a lasting finish.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
K Vintners 2014 Motor City Kitty Syrah (Yakima Valley) $32.99 This is a vibrant Syrah, overflowing with ripe black fruit on the nose, followed up by notes of spice and oak. Dense fruit flavors of dark cherries, blackberries and stewed plums are tinged with accents of mocha, expresso and cinnamon that come to a lush, lasting finish.
Storypoint 2015 California Pinot Noir $14.99 A deep garnet color in the glass, this offers aromas of flowers and strawberries. The flavor profile offers cherries, strawberries and spices plus a pleasant hint of cedar. Smooth and well-balanced tannins carry this to a silky, long and very satisfying finish.
Altemasi TrentoDoc Brut (Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy) $19.99 From the Dolomite Mountains of northern Italy, this is a clean, crisp and richly flavored sparkling wine. Apple and pleasant toasty aromas lead to a tingling palate of golden apple, pear and floral flavors that are fully dry, and supported by a fresh, zesty acidity.
Samuel Smith Organic Pale Ale (Yorkshire, England) $5.99 This is a classic, lightly malt-accented and copper-colored English Pale Ale. Subtle fruity notes from the proprietary Samuel Smith yeast strains interact with caramel flavors – from organic crystal malts – and fresh hops to create this delicious brew.
Cheers!
