THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:
Charles Krug 2016 Sauvignon Blanc (Napa Valley) $15.99 This is a bright, lively Sauvignon Blanc with an enticing mix of fresh grapefruit, kiwi, lime and fresh-cut grass aromas. The palate is tangy and balanced, with flavors of ripe orchard fruits and citrus that stay nicely focused through a crisp finish.
Brancaia 2013 TRE (Tuscany, Italy) $19.99 This Tuscan blend of 80% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot opens with hints of violets, spiced fruits and herbs. The palate is distinguished by an excellent balance of black cherry and plum fruit balanced by firm tannins.
Storypoint 2015 California Cabernet Sauvignon $14.99 Storypoint Cabernet exudes bright aromas of ripe dark fruits, wild berries, cedar and a hint of rose petals. It’s full-bodied, with blackberry and cassis flavors accented with elements of chocolate, mocha, spices and a touch of oak.
Skyfall Vineyard 2015 Merlot (Columbia Valley) $15.99 The Skyfall Vineyard Merlot is a savory red with a complex bouquet of ripe dark cherry, pomegranate and plum scents, followed by intricately woven flavors of raspberries and black plums. Smooth, supple tannins carry all that generous fruit to a long, silky finish.
Bodegas Salentein 2015 Reserve Malbec (Uco Valley, Argentina) $19.99 This is a very aromatic, floral and fruit-driven Malbec. The palate is silky, with a satisfying texture and sweet round tannins carrying its concentrated raspberry, blueberry and violet flavors. The long, flavorful finish builds on that compelling interplay of fruit and floral tones.
Alejandro Fernández 2014 Tinto Pesquera Crianza (Ribera del Duero, Spain) $32.99 This Tempranillo opens with deeply scented tones of ripe blueberries and plums, complemented by hints of cedar and roasted coffee. The palate shows outstanding depth, offering layers of ripe black plum and currant fruit flavors on a solid, gripping tannic frame.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
Dunham Cellars 2012 Syrah (Columbia Valley) $35.99 The Dunham 2012 Syrah opens with a dense blackberry and plum-scented nose. Blueberry, blackberry and plum fruit flavors accented by hints of cinnamon and nutmeg weave through the mid-palate. Vanilla, cocoa bean and hints of kitchen spices mingle on the velvety finish.
Starmont 2014 Merlot (Carneros) $22.99 The Starmont Merlot has a ripe and juicy core of blackberry, plum and dark cherry fruit. Firm and dry yet elegantly styled, it shows elements of rich spice that accent the fruit and add complexity. The round, soft finish shows a light accent of vanilla.
Moselland 2015 Riesling Spätlese (Mosel Valley, Germany) $14.99 This is a crisp and delicious Riesling from Germany’s Mosel River Valley. It exudes luscious aromas of peaches and apricots on the nose and displays equally intense, vivid fruit flavors on the lush, juicy palate. Finely honed acidity frames a fresh finish.
Green Flash Imperial IPA (San Diego) $7.99 This brew clocks in at 9.0% ABV with a whopping 101 IBU’s, and it’s considered by many to be Imperial IPA drinking at its finest. While definitely a big beer, it’s not overwhelming, rather finding a foothold in the subtleties of each sip — a hint of pine needles here, a bit of tangy grapefruit there — a touch of sweet pineapple — the nuances just go on and on…
Cheers!
