Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
This coming Sunday, February 14th is Valentine’s Day. As I’ve been saying for all these years, a nice bottle of sparkling wine, sweet wine or whatever other type of wine your sweetheart likes most makes the perfect Valentine’s Day gift. And it’s something you both can share! We have lots of great wines to choose from here at the Wine Cellar, so don’t forget to stop by before Saturday evening…
THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING):
Virginia Dare 2014 Chardonnay (Russian River Valley) $19.99
This Sonoma Chardonnay opens with lush tropical tones of orange blossoms, pineapple and honeyed peach, along with a buttery note of pastry crust. The elegant palate brings in a measure of balancing minerality, and a satisfying touch of oak toast adds to the wine’s deliciously creamy, rich character.
Black Stallion 2012 Pinot Noir (Los Carneros) $22.99
Earthy and savory, this Carneros Pinot is soft and velvety on the palate, entirely inviting and mellow. The flavors are marked by delicious black cherry and raspberry fruit, plus complex notes of herbs and fennel. A cool minerality and fresh acidity lead this to a long, layered finish.
Bodegas Príncipe de Viana 2013 Graciano (Navarra, Spain) $12.99
This 100% Graciano is from Navarra, a wine region that lies next to far more famous Rioja. A little-known native varietal, it makes a lively and enjoyable red, offering up a bouquet of black raspberries, smoky minerals and spicy oak. It’s smooth and supple in the mouth, with flavors of ripe cherry and cassis.
Lyeth 2012 Meritage (Sonoma County) $14.99
Lyeth was among the first California vintners to seek greater complexity and finesse in their wines by blending Cabernet Sauvignon with other Bordeaux varietals like Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Their 2012 Meritage shows bright flavors of black cherry and red currant, with notes of spice and cedar.
Miraflores 2013 “Clone” Rhone Blend (El Dorado County) $22.99
The “Clone” is blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre, crafted in the style of the great Chateauneuf-du-Pape reds of France. The palate offers a classic southern Rhone Valley mixture of ripe dark raspberries and peppery spice notes. Soft, smooth tannins create a silky mouthfeel through the finish.
Markham Vineyards 2013 Cellar 1879 Blend (Napa Valley) $22.99
Six different varietals go into the Cellar 1879 red. Merlot takes the lead, along with Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Zinfandel and Petit Verdot. The wine offers plenty of rich dark fruit character edged with accents of smoky, toasty oak.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
Joseph Carr 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa County) $21.99
This Cabernet embodies a traditional, old-school approach, where terroir is allowed to express itself and the “art of the blend” creates wines with complexity and balance. Joseph Carr worked with small growers in Napa County to put together this cuvée, a wine that offers richness, depth and elegance.
Farmers of Wine 2013 Italian Red (Puglia, Italy) $14.99
Farmers of Wine is a southern Italian blend of native Negroamaro and Primitivo grapes grown by small family farmers in southern Italy’s “boot-heel,” Puglia. The wine offers intense, bright aromas of ripe fruits with hints of licorice. The palate delivers a delicious mouthful of red fruit flavors with food-friendly acidity.
Joya Red Sangria (Spain) $13.99
The Joya Sangria is made in Spain using only the native Spanish grapes Termpranillo, Garnacha and Bobal. It’s made from an authentic old Spanish recipe without using any artificial flavors or additives. Sangria makes the perfect party wine – served well-chilled!
Left Coast Red Tide Ale (San Clemente) $6.99
This American Belgian-style Red Ale blends West Coast hops and caramel roasted malt with a Belgian yeast character. Ruby red in color, it’s hoppy and spicy, with a light “roasty” quality and a dry malt finish.
Cheers!
