Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
This Friday it will be time to join in the annual St. Paddy’s Day celebration with a few libations, and of course Historic Downtown with all of our great public houses is the logical location in Yuma to do it. I suggest the place to start is the Old Town Wine Cellar! Begin the evening’s festivities with a wine tasting here at the Cellar, and feel free to enjoy a glass or two as well before you move on. We hope to see you!
THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:
Fess Parker 2015 Riesling (Santa Barbara County) $12.99
This is a refreshing, off-dry style of Riesling with luscious, ultra-ripe peach, apricot and melon aromas and flavors. Balancing the richness of all that fruit is a streak of keen acidity that frames a bright and zesty finish.
Sanctuary 2013 Pinot Noir, Bien Nacido Vineyard (Santa Maria Valley) $29.99
This Pinot sourced from the renowned Bien Nacido Vineyard offers lovely black cherry, strawberry and floral aromas on the nose. It’s rich and full in the mouth, with hints of oak, anise and exotic spices. The result is an elegant and complex wine with finely integrated tannins, fresh acidity and a long, cherry and spice-laden finish.
Villadoria 2010 Nebbiolo Bricco Magno (Piedmont, Italy) $15.99
This Langhe Nebbiolo is a beautiful clear garnet in the glass. The nose offers a mix of toasty vanilla, rose petal and spice notes. The palate is velvety and welcoming, with a warm, complex profile of red cherry fruit, licorice, spices and a subtle underlay of earthy accents.
Josh Cellars 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon (California) $14.99
This Cabernet shows expressive aromas of spicy black cherry and ripe blackberry, with light hints of cedar and mocha. Mouth-filling flavors of juicy black and red fruits are laced with accents of herbs and spices, all through a rich, lingering finish.
Alamos 2014 Selección Malbec (Mendoza, Argentina) $18.99
Alamos Selección Malbec shows an opaque dark violet hue. The nose offers up ripe blueberry fruit with hints of violets and sweet spice. The mouthfeel is full and rich, with rich blackberry and cherry fruit flavors and a slight black pepper kick. The finish is smooth and silky, lingering nicely.
Marqués de Vargas 2010 Rioja Reserva (Rioja, Spain) $25.99
On the nose, this Reserva offers exotic aromas of vanilla, clove and cinnamon. A smooth, silky palate shows abundant dark cherry and black plum fruit flavors, with exotic hints of fresh earth, tobacco and Indian spice that carry to the finish.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
Venge Vineyards 2015 Scout’s Honor Red (Napa Valley) $34.99
The Scout’s Honor Red has a gorgeous nose of stone fruits, crushed violets, cherries, anise and a touch of honeysuckle. On the palate, old-vine Zinfandel offers loads of super-ripe blackberry and pepper spice, along with an enveloping masculinity of tannins and char from Syrah, Charbono and Petite Sirah.
Chateau La Freynelle 2015 Entre-Deux-Mers (Bordeaux, France) $14.99
This is a classic “White Bordeaux” blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Muscadelle. It offers a lush, fruity nose of white peaches, citrus fruits and beeswax. An elegant, fresh palate showcases bright fruit flavors framed by zesty minerality, finishing crisp and clean.
Renwood 2014 Old Vine Zinfandel (Amador County) $15.99
This Old Vine Zin opens with enticing aromas of ripe blackberries and raspberries plus exotic hints of mulling spices like clove and cinnamon. On the palate, the rich, ripe berry fruit flavors are enlivened with dashes of mint, black licorice, vanilla and spicy oak.
Boulder Brewing 2016 Killer Penguin (Boulder, Colorado) $9.99
Diving in at 10% ABV, the Killer Penguin takes twice the malt as other winter beers, and is aged for over six months to perfect the condition and flavor of this ‘barleywine’ style brew. Released just once a year, this brew doesn’t just ferment, it hibernates, and wakes up with an attitude….
Cheers!
