THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:
Rutherford Ranch 2013 Chardonnay (Napa Valley) $15.99
This is classic California Chardonnay, with floral and fruit scents of pineapple, apricot, lemon meringue and apple complemented by notes of hazelnut and spice. It’s buttery and rich on the palate, with fresh, juicy fruit plus a note of spicy vanilla from oak aging.
Landmark Overlook 2012 California Pinot Noir $21.99
The Landmark Overlook 2012 blends premium fruit from cool growing sites in San Luis Obispo, Sonoma and Monterey Counties to beautiful effect. Packed with vibrant red fruit, silky tannins and a kiss of French oak spice, this is a graceful and supple California Pinot that really does credit to the varietal.
Dow Vale do Bomfim (Douro Valley, Portugal) $12.99
This Portuguese blend of native red varietals has a juicy core of cherry, plum and raspberry flavors marked by firm acidity. The lively fruit is supported by elegant tannins and a fine, savory finish is accented by a light hint of white pepper.
Lyeth 2012 Meritage (Sonoma County) $14.99
Lyeth was among the first California vintners to seek greater complexity and finesse in their wines by blending Cabernet Sauvignon with other Bordeaux varietals like Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Their 2012 Meritage shows bright flavors of black cherry and red currant, with notes of spice and cedar.
Borgogno 2012 Barbera d’Alba (Piedmont, Italy) $24.99
This Barbera opens with violet and mineral aromas, and a note of menthol. It’s plump and opulent on the palate, yet it’s intensely flavored, with blackberry, plum and spice-laden flavors giving an overall succulence, supported by a fresh and balanced acidity.
North Star 2010 Merlot (Columbia Valley) $34.99
Aged in French oak for 18 months, this Merlot has an alluring bouquet of dark cherry, currants and toast. The palate is superbly balanced, silky and elegant. Leaning heavily towards the more finesse-driven aspect of the wine spectrum, it displays smooth tannins with a moderate level of power and concentration.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
Penfolds 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon, Bin 407 (South Australia) $49.99
Penfolds Bin 407 Cabernet comes remarkably close to their luxury Bin 707 Cabernet in terms of quality, but at a far friendlier price, offering a full, rich character and firm but velvety tannins. Cedar, spearmint and mocha accents swirl amid the superbly concentrated black currant, wild berry and Damson plum fruit flavors.
Dr. Pauly-Bergweiler 2011 Riesling Spatlese, Wehlener Sonnenuhr (Mosel Valley, Germany) $29.99
Intoxicatingly aromatic, this is world-class Riesling that offers beautiful delicacy and superb balance in its layers of peach, apricot and citrus flavors. It’s airy and appealing, with a mouthwatering degree of tanginess that gives elegance to the lingering finish.
Colavita 2011 Valpolicella Ripasso (Veneto, Italy) $14.99
Ripasso is a style of northern Italian red wine made from partially-dried grapes. This is a blend of Corvina, Rondinella and Corvinone grapes from the Valpolicella appellation of Veneto. The warm, Adriatic coastal plains and river valleys of the region are ideal for creating wines with memorably rich, savory flavors.
Ommegang Three-Eyed Raven Dark Saison Ale Cooperstown, New York $10.99
The ominous ‘Three-Eyed Raven’ from the Game of Thrones series inspired Ommegang to create this dark Saison ale, a hybrid style open to the brewer’s imagination. In the end it’s neither a pure Saison nor a typical dark beer, just a delicious blend that thrills the senses…
Cheers!
