Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
Just one more week and April will be behind us, but the weather is still wonderful, if a tad bit more toasty in the afternoon than we’ve become accustomed to after such a mellow winter and early spring season. But most folks know that there will be plenty of scorching days in the long summer season to come, so be sure take advantage of this great weather while we still have it. For instance, come on down to Historic Downtown Yuma on a beautiful late spring evening sometime soon, and enjoy a leisurely stroll on Main Street. And be sure to stop in at the Old Town Wine Cellar when you do!
THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:
Skyfall Vineyard 2014 Pinot Gris (Columbia Valley) $14.99 This Washington State Pinot Gris gives a first impression of restrained pineapple, peach, apricot, and light floral aromas on top of a clean flinty note. The palate offers bright flavors of stone fruits and citrus, with a finely etched minerality that frames a crisply refreshing finish.
Michele Chiarlo 2014 Il Principe Langhe Nebbiolo (Piedmont, Italy) $19.99 Chiarlo’s Il Principe Nebbiolo offers an alluring bouquet of raspberry and strawberry. The palate shows the classic varietal character of ripe red cherry accented by complex accents of dry herbs, earth and cedar, on an elegantly smooth and silky tannic frame.
Shoo Fly 2014 Shiraz (South Australia) $12.99 Shoo Fly opens with hints of spicy red berry fruits, plums and mint. In the mouth it’s a succulent thunderbolt of pure Shiraz, right to the last sip. Showing plenty of brawn as well as a surprising degree of finesse, it culminates with an irresistable “have another glass” finish.
Lindeman’s 2015 Gentleman’s Collection Red (California) $15.99 The Gentleman’s Collection Red is a dense, juicy and decidedly fruit-forward blend of Petite Sirah, Zinfandel and Merlot, sourced from Central Coast and North Coast vineyards. It’s a palate-pleasing sipper with no hard edges and a fresh, fruit-filled finish.
Celler Cecilio 2014 Black Slate Gratallops (Priorat, Spain) $22.99 This is a blend of older and younger vine fruit from August Cecilio’s vineyards near the village of Gratallops, in the Priorat region of northeast Spain. A blend of Garnacha, Cariñena and Syrah, it offers delicious blackberry, blueberry and floral flavors edged with exotic spice accents.
Bootleg Wine Works 2013 Bootleg Red (Napa Valley) $39.99 Bootleg Red is sourced from premier vineyard sites in the Atlas Peak, Oakville, Mt. Veeder, Spring Mountain and Rutherford AVA’s. It’s a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot. It’s a hedonistic and fabulously rich Napa red, with seemingly bottomless depth and a finish that goes on and on…
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
Cadaretta 2013 Estate Syrah (Columbia Valley) $24.99 This deep purple-colored Syrah offers a nose of blackberries and roasted plums, with accents of spice, coffee and vanilla. It’s full and rich on the palate, with fleshy but gripping tannins and medium acidity. Aged 21 months in a mix of French and American oak barrels, it’s blended with 11% Mourvedre, 5% Grenache and 2% Viognier.
Chocolate Shop Chocolate Infused Red (California) $11.99 Chocolate Shop mixes dark chocolate with wine to create a sumptuous red. They start with a proprietary blending of premium red varietals, add a touch of oak plus a kiss of sweetness to create the perfect fruit-driven package for a rich dark chocolate character that unfolds in silken layers across the palate.
Hazaña Rioja Viñas Viejas Rioja (Rioja, Spain) $13.99 This Rioja is a blend of 85% Tempranillo and 15% Graciano, from 45 to 70 year-old, un-irrigated vines. Deep, dark-fruited aromas with a light hint of wood smoke greet the nose. On the palate, the wine offers juicy black plum and dark cherry fruit, with accents of sweet tobacco and old leather.
Goose Island Matilda Belgian-Style Pale Ale (Chicago, Illinois) $13.99 (12oz. 4-pak) Matilda pours a rich amber-brown in the glass, and presents a delightful ballet of citrus and floral aromas. Prominent notes of malts and yeast give it a slightly bready quality. The smooth taste profile is evocative of the classic Belgian ales that inspired this deliciously satisfying brew.
Cheers!
