Greetings from the Wine Cellar:

Mother’s Day is getting close, this Sunday the 13th of May to be exact.   As I always say (pretty much every year in fact), a great way to show Mom how much you care is by buying her a real nice bottle of wine for her special day (you could also say “I love you Mom – but why not do both?)  Drop by the Wine Cellar this week and we’ll help you pick out a bottle that will make her Mother’s Day a bit more special.  And while you’re here, hang out for a while and sample this week’s selection!

THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:

Gundlach Bundschu 2016 Estate Gewürztraminer (Sonoma Coast)    $19.99 This is a wonderfully fresh, off-dry Gewürz, medium-bodied with fine acidity. Scents of lychee fruit, honeysuckle and jasmine are followed up with delicate flavors of orange peel, peach, pear and melon, accented by the characteristic spiciness of the varietal.

Beckon 2016 Pinot Noir (Central Coast)    $17.99 Made with fruit sourced from Monterey, San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties, this Pinot Noir exudes lovely black cherry, strawberry and floral aromas.  It’s rich and full in the mouth, with a mixture of dark fruit and exotic spices, and a lengthy cherry-and-spice-filled finish.

Piattelli 2016 Malbec (Mendoza, Argentina)    $14.99 This inky-purple Malbec offers a bouquet of dark fruits, coffee and freshly-tilled earth. On the palate, flavors of ripe black cherries, blackberries and cassis mingle with smoke, black pepper and light vanilla tones. It’s an elegant, balanced red with a silky texture.

Avalon 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa County)    $16.99 This Cabernet offers scents of bright cherry, currant and raspberry, plus hints of toasted oak and vanilla.  In the glass, flavors of wild berry and plum mingle on a lingering finish.  Polished tannins, a moderate palate weight and balanced acidity make it very easy to drink…

Mazzei 2013 Ser Lapo Chianti Classico Riserva (Tuscany, Italy)    $22.99 This Riserva offers inviting aromas of black cherries, plums and sweet spices, with notes of rose petals and cracked pepper. It’s elegant and silky on the palate, with abundant dark fruit flavors and the classic Chianti character of old leather.  Firm, drying tannins frame a lingering finish.

Rombauer 2015 California Zinfandel    $34.99 This 100% Zinfandel begins with deep, lush aromas of cherries, blackberries and plums, plus an enticing vanilla note.  In the mouth, it’s classic Zin: big, intense and mouth-filling, packed full of ripe wild berry fruit enlivened with spicy, peppery accents.

NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:

Masi 2013 Brolo Campofiorin Oro (Veneto, Italy)    $24.99 Brolo Campofiorin Oro is a Riserva version of Masi’s popular Campofiorin Ripasso.  The nose has a spicy complexity derived from dried grapes. On the palate, it has a bold and mouthfilling richness, with a complex, layered array of black fruit flavors supported by solid, ripe tannins that wrap around the long finish.

Blue Nun 24 Karat Sparkling Wine (Germany)    $15.99 Blue Nun 24K is a delicious sparkler that’s light, dry, fresh and elegant, with a delicious fruit-filled character.  It achieves its effervescence through a centuries-old fermentation process, and then to highlight the natural bubbles they add genuine 24 karat gold flakes.  It’s the perfect sparkling wine for special occasions, celebrations or just for fun!

Arizona Stronghold 2016 Nachise Red (Arizona)    $19.99 Nachise is a Rhone-style blend of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre.  Rich aromas of ripe red raspberries and plums mixed with notes of juniper, desert herbs, and cedar emerge on the nose.  Flavors of dark cherries and currants are mixed with incense and black tea elements, finishing with a light hint of oak.

Hofbräu München Original Lager (Munich, Germany)    $5.99 Hofbräu Original is a Munich Helles Lager.  A luminous golden in color, crowned with a foamy white top, it has a sweet and yeasty aroma of grains, spice and honey with light touch of hops.  In the mouth, sweet bready malts are infused with spicy hops, floral accents and pleasant hint of yeast.

Cheers!
