Lots of folks head away from town for the holiday weekend, but plenty more (like me!) stick around and get together with friends and family to celebrate the beginning of summer with lots of food, beverage and fun. Here at the Wine Cellar we specialize in the beverage part, with a really great selection of wines and craft beers that will make any holiday weekend get-together a bit more special. So be sure to stop by the Cellar this week and stock up. This week’s wine tasting selections would all be great weekend party options – come in and give them a try!
THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:
Suavia 2016 Soave Classico (Veneto, Italy) $15.99 This is made with 100% Garganega grapes from the Tessari family’s estate in the heart of the Soave appellation. Scents of apple, pear and almond balance a clean minerality amid hints of fresh herbs. Crisp, refreshing flavors of pears and citrus build into a harmonious and lengthy finish.
Laetitia 2016 Estate Pinot Noir (Arroyo Grande Valley) $22.99 Exuding dark mulberry tones and aromas of cranberry and spiced plums, this Pinot is rich and medium-bodied. Youthful flavors of pomegranate, sandalwood and black cherry are married beautifully with spicy cedar and smoke accents, all framed with silky tannins.
André Brunel 2013 Grenache (Vin de Pays de Vaucluse, France) $11.99 André Brunel of Châteauneuf-du-Pape fame puts maximum effort into all of his wines, from the top Châteauneufs to this humble Vin de Pays Grenache. It’s a surprisingly complex and intense red, with a nice mix of cracked black pepper spice tones and ripe berry and plum fruit.
Goldschmidt Winery 2015 Fidelity Red Alexander Valley $15.99 All the fruit for this wine was sourced from Nick Goldschmidt’s Crazy Creek Vineyard in Sonoma’s Alexander Valley. A Meritage blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, it’s a rich and supple red with flavors of black cherries, espresso and dark chocolate.
Izadi 2011 Rioja Reserva (Rioja, Spain) $19.99 This Reserva show a deep ruby in the glass, offering a nose of ripe cherries and violets with hints of spice and vanilla. Rich dark fruit flavors and exotic touches of leather and cedar predominate on the palate, well supported by firm tannins.
Director’s Cut 2013 Cinema Red (Sonoma County) $34.99 Made with fruit sourced from the Dry Creek, Alexander and Knight’s Valley, this Zinfandel-Cabernet Sauvignon blend offers a rich fragrance of blackberry pie, cassis, cherries, cigar box and vanilla followed by lush layers of fruit set upon a velvety palate. Nuances of ripe cherries, dark chocolate and sweet, smoky oak are elevated by the long, spicy finish.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
Martinelli 2013 Zinfandel, Martinelli Road Vineyard (Russian River Valley) $34.99 The Martinelli Road Zin offers powerful, smoke- and vanilla-accented aromas of candied red fruits and fresh flowers, with a peppery accent. Rich and juicy on the palate, intense raspberry and blackberry flavors are both lifted and sharpened by tangy acidity. The slow-building tannins give shape to a persistent finish, which strongly echoes the raspberry element.
Van Duzer 2016 Estate Pinot Gris (Willamette Valley) $18.99 This is a vibrant and delicious Pinot Gris, with a fine mineral edge. A fragrant nose of Bosc pears, ripe peaches and orange blossoms reminiscent of a fragrant citrus grove leads into a flavorful palate of lush white peach and citrus zest. The wine is juicy, rich and elegant, with crisp acidity.
Bodegas Sommos 2016 Xiloca Garnacha (Calatayud, Spain) $10.99 Bodegas Sommos produces the Xiloca Garnacha from 250 acres of estate vineyards that are between 40 and 100 years old. This wine offers ripe black cherry and black raspberry hints on a fragrant nose, with deliciously rich dark fruit flavors on the palate. It’s smooth and soft in texture, with a peppery nuance that gives it a pleasant lift.
Cheers!
