Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
Summer is officially here in Yuma once we hit June, as we will by the end of this week. That said, the weather is still pretty darn pleasant, even if unmistakably trending a tad hotter as the days pass. There will still be plenty going on here in Historic Downtown Yuma this summer, and we’ll try to keep everyone informed about events and happenings downtown that help make these ultra-toasty summers in the Great Southwest a bit more tolerable. And there will always be our wine tastings at the Old Town Wine Cellar all day Tuesday through Friday, reason enough to make it downtown on a regular basis!
THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING
Fess Parker 2017 Riesling (Santa Barbara County) $12.99 This refreshing, off-dry Riesling overflows with luscious, ultra-ripe peach, apricot and melon aromas and flavors. Balancing the richness of the fruit is a streak of keen acidity that frames a bright and zesty finish.
Route Stock 2017 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) $24.99 Route Stock Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir opens with intense aromas of ripe plum, dark cherry and raspberry followed by subtle hints of earthy truffle and spice. Precise and clean, the wine offers a pleasing palate of ripe dark cherry fruit edged with a subtle hint of tobacco leaf.
Delas 2017 Côtes du Rhône Saint-Esprit (Rhone Valley, France) $14.99 Saint-Esprit is made with primarily Grenache grapes sourced from a small village in the southern Rhone. The vineyard’s southern exposure on steep, granitic hillsides provides a perfect growing environment. It’s a fresh and savory red, with rich fruit flavors accented by spice notes.
Terlato & Chapoutier 2014 Shiraz-Viognier (Victoria, Australia) $17.99 A Down Under collaboration by acclaimed French winemaker Michel Chapoutier and Napa Valley vintner Anthony Terlato, this offers rich black plum, cherry and currant aromas plus dark chocolate and toast accents. Ripe berry and pomegranate flavors are carried on a silky texture.
Bogle 2015 Phantom California Red $19.99 Bogle’s Phantom is a blend of Petite Sirah, Zinfandel and Mourvedre grapes sourced from very old vines. It offers concentrated red raspberry, dark chocolate and red and black currant flavors, framed by accents of cedar and vanilla. This is one big, bold mouthful of fruit…
Il Borro 2015 Pian di Nova (Tuscany, Italy) $27.99 This Tuscan blend of 65% Syrah & 35% Sangiovese is superbly balanced, with an abundance of rich dark fruit flavors in a classic Old World style. Complex notes of sweet tobacco, anise and peppery spices mix with a wealth of currant and black cherry fruit.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS
Bastianich 2016 Schiopettino (Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy) $15.99
Northern Italy’s Schioppettino varietal is known for its fine structure and finesse. Its complexity and light color has earned it the title of the “Pinot Noir of Friuli”. It’s fruity and pleasantly spicy on the palate, with balanced acidity and silky tannins.
Lease-Fitch 2017 Sauvignon Blanc (California) $11.99 This is a bright, lively Sauvignon Blanc with an enticing mix of fresh grapefruit, kiwi, lime and fresh-cut grass aromas. The palate is tangy and balanced, with delicious flavors of ripe orchard fruits and citrus.
Montevina 2014 Cracked Earth California Red $11.99 Surprisingly smooth, this medium-bodied and easy-drinking red seems to melt in the mouth. Ripe black cherry, blueberry and lightly smoky aromas segue into more cherry and chocolate flavors on the palate, with a texture that’s silky and appealing. A blend of Zinfandel, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.
Moobuzz 2015 G S M (Central Coast) $18.99 Hibiscus and strawberry aromas are an appealing invitation on the nose of this Rhone-style blend of Grenache (70%), Syrah and Mourvèdre, and then peppery spice notes up the ante. This would make the perfect summertime red, served with just a light chill on it to showcase the bright flavors of sandalwood, red cherry and marjoram.
Cheers!
