Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
The Yuma Jazz Company Quintet is once again jazzing up our summer here in Historic Downtown with the 5th Annual Lutes’ Summer Jazz Series. This summer concert series will feature the Quintet’s regular members in performance along with occasional guest musicians and vocalists. The next one takes place just down the street at Lutes Casino (221 S. Main) this Friday evening, June 8th, beginning at 7PM. There’s no cover charge for the performances, presented by Lutes’ and Yuma’s Public Radio Station KAWC. Be sure to catch a performance before the summer slips away; you don’t have to be a jazz fan to enjoy how well these guys can play. It’s a great summer evening’s entertainment, so check it out this Friday after wine tasting at the Cellar!
THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:
Fontana Candida 2015 Frascati (Lazio, Italy) $11.99 The grapes for this refreshingly dry, clean white grow in porous volcanic soils near the city of Rome. A distinct minerality drives the nose, with scents of peach, pear, citrus peel and basil. Dominant notes of citrus and pear plus a light touch of toasted almonds highlight the palate.
Delas 2016 Côtes du Rhône Saint-Esprit (Rhone Valley, France) $12.99 Saint-Esprit is made with primarily Grenache grapes sourced from a small village in the southern Rhone. The vineyard’s southern exposure on steep, granitic hillsides provides a perfect growing environment. It’s a fresh and savory red, with rich fruit accented by spice notes.
Robert Mondavi 2015 Bourbon Barrel Aged Cabernet Sauvignon (Monterey County) $14.99 This Monterey County Cabernet blends California craftsmanship with Southern Bourbon whiskey aging tradition. Fruit sourced from coastal vineyards imparts deep, rich flavors of black cherries and blackberries. Aging for three months in select Bourbon barrels adds intriguing nuances of vanilla and brown sugar.
Altamana 2014 Grand Reserve Malbec (Maule Valley, Chile) $17.99 Altamana Grand Reserve Malbec offers bright aromas of dark cherry, blackberry, black olive and violets. In the mouth it’s velvety yet firmly structured, with abundant black cherry, fig and raspberry fruit followed by accents of cocoa, cedar and licorice that frame a muscular finish.
Condado de Haza 2014 Crianza (Ribera del Duero) $21.99 This opens with intense, lush scents of ripe raspberries and plums with floral tones. The palate is plush and expansive, with spiced cherry and cassis flavors and bitter chocolate notes. Toasty vanilla and cracked pepper hints emerge, carrying this to a lengthy, gently tannic finish.
Frank Family 2016 Pinot Noir (Carneros) $29.99 This Carneros Pinot is a brilliant ruby in the glass, and opens with aromas of cinnamon stick, cardamom and fresh raspberries. On the palate, a soft and balanced structure framed by silky tannins offers rich flavors of berry pie, black plums, violets and baking spices.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
Duorum 2013 Colheita (Douro Valley, Portugal) $22.99 A blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz, this Douro red has an aromatic bouquet of black cherries, mocha and violets. On the palate, a dense core of violet, plum and dark berry fruit flavors on a silky texture has balanced acidity and well-integrated, fine-grained tannins.
Michele Chiarlo 2015 Le Marne Gavi (Piedmont, Italy) $19.99 Gavi comes from a small region in northwest Italy, on the steep slopes of the Apennines Mountains. Made from the native Cortese varietal, this wine offers a savory palate of white peach, green apple, sage and a light hint of toasted almonds, framed with bright acidity. A mineral note enlivens the finish.
Cameron Hughes 2012 Lot 454 Old Vine Zinfandel (Lodi) $8.99 This Old Vine Lodi Zin exudes aromas of sweet vanilla, fennel and ripe blueberries and boysenberries. It’s lush and juicy on the palate, overflowing with ripe, brambly wild berry fruit flavors that culminate in a long finish edged with pepper and spice.
Cheers!
