Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
This Sunday, June 17th is Father’s Day, so with no further ado here’s my annual pitch that a nice bottle of wine makes a great (and very easy) gift for Dad (and Mom would probably enjoy it too!). A good Napa Cabernet, a fine Tuscan red from Italy, a bottle of Port – whatever you pick, it’s bound be something he’ll to appreciate and enjoy. Alternatively, a Wine Cellar Gift Certificate makes a great gift – let him pick out whatever strikes his fancy. And if you’re lucky you may get invited over to share a glass!
THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:
Charles Krug 2016 Sauvignon Blanc (Napa Valley) $15.99 This is a bright, lively Sauvignon Blanc with an enticing mix of fresh grapefruit, kiwi, lime and fresh-cut grass aromas. The palate is tangy and balanced, with flavors of ripe orchard fruits and citrus that stay nicely focused through a crisp finish.
Villa Antinori 2013 Toscana Rosso (Tuscany, Italy) $19.99 Villa Antinori is a Tuscan blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah crafted by the renowned Piero Antinori. The wine’s bouquet offers scents of sweet fruit and a hint of spicy oak. Black cherry and cassis fruit dominates the palate, with a touch of dark chocolate.
14 Hands 2016 Run Wild Red (Columbia Valley) $11.99 Juicy and fruit-forward, 14 Hands Run Wild showcases a vibrant blend of red varietals with flavors of ripe blueberries, black currants and raspberries. Soft tannins and lively acidity make this wine a delicious by-the-glass pour.
Terra d’Oro 2014 Barbera (Amador County) $17.99 The Barbera grape, while native to northern Italy’s Piedmont region, thrives in Amador County. This is a fruity and medium-bodied red with the classic Barbera character of ripe black cherries, blackberries and currants, edged with a pleasant touch of savory spice.
Duorum 2013 Colheita (Douro Valley, Portugal) $22.99 A blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz, this Douro red has an aromatic bouquet of black cherries, mocha and violets. On the palate, a dense core of violet, plum and dark berry fruit flavors has balanced acidity on a silky texture, with well-integrated, fine-grained tannins.
Route Stock 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) $22.99 An aromatic nose showcases a variety of dark fruits plus hints of cedar, tobacco and violets. In the mouth the wine offers a rush of ripe plum, currant and black cherry fruit, supported with subtle oak tones and soft, approachable tannins. Vanilla and kirsch notes make an appearance on a lengthy finish.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
Beronia 2009 Rioja Gran Reserva (Rioja, Spain) $32.99 This Gran Reserva was aged in French oak for 27 months, and another 36 months in the bottle prior to release. The nose offers a subtle interplay of exotic spices, fragrant wood and sweet dark cherry. A velvety palate shows fine-grained tannins wrapped around an intense, super-ripe core of red and black fruits, with a subtle vanillin accent.
Domaine Lafage 2016 Miraflors Rosé (Côtes du Roussillon, France) $17.99 Light in color, but definitely not in flavor, the 2016 Côtes du Roussillon Miraflors Rose (60% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre and 10% Carignan) offers juicy notes of white cherries, strawberries and rose petals in a medium-bodied, nicely layered and impeccably balanced style that’s very hard to resist…
Dashe 2014 Zinfandel (Dry Creek Valley) $22.99 The Dashe Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel offers all of the varietal’s typical peppery, raspberry and black cherry fruit, earthy and spicy tones, and a character which begs for meals cooked outside on the grill. It’s a fresh and delicious example of a true California classic.
Cheers!
