Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
This coming Saturday, June 22nd, the Old Town Wine Cellar presents another in our series of occasional Saturday beer tastings. As we’ve done in the past, we’ll offer a taste of six of our great imported ales and American craft beers for a tasting fee of just $5.00, starting at 2:00 and continuing until 5:00 PM. In case you haven’t noticed, the Cellar isn’t just about great wine – we also offer a selection of more than 50 artisan beers from all over the world. So if you’re in town this weekend, stop by and try some of them!
THURSDAY & FRIDAY WINE TASTING – $10.00 to try them all, or $10.00 for a full glass:
La Crema 2011 Chardonnay (Monterey County) $17.99
This opens with layered aromas of tropical fruit and exotic floral notes mixed with butterscotch and spice accents. On the palate, ripe stone fruit flavors abound, framed by a fine minerality and subtle nuances of toast and caramel. The broad mouthfeel balances a bright acidity and lingering citrus character.
Sterling Vineyards 2011 Pinot Noir (Carneros) $24.99
From a legendary growing region, this offers a dark red fruit profile graced with toasty oak. Black cherry and rich toffee aromas greet the nose followed by brambly berry notes. Sweet notes of forest floor and juicy cherry cobbler weave through a smooth and supple palate. The finish is long and satisfying, with a spicy fruit intensity that extends through the finale.
Cooralook 2008 Shiraz (Heathcote, Australia) $15.99
This wine offers classic Shiraz dark fruit flavors, plus hints of sweet cherries. Ten months of oak aging add accents of spice and toasty vanilla. It’s smooth and supple in texture, with the ripe fruit and spice notes playing off nicely against a slight earthiness.
Luna Vineyards 2010 Lunatic California Red $17.99
Luna’s Lunatic combines Sangiovese, Syrah, Petite Sirah and Grenache into a robust red with lush fruit and supple tannins. Aromas of juicy berries and plums mix with savory spice notes. The ripe blackberry and cherry fruit flavors extend beautifully to a polished and satisfying finish.
Starmont 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) $22.99
The Merryvale 2009 Starmont is packed with sweet red berry fruit, flowers, spices and licorice. This is a mid-weight Cab that offers true varietal character combined with a soft juiciness and approachability. It’s a delicious Napa Cabernet to drink right now.
Luis Cañas 2004 Reserva de la Familia (Rioja, Spain) $34.99
A superb representation of what top-level Rioja Reserva has that no other region or country can offer: a remarkable combination of fresh, bright fruit and toasted vanilla notes, along with the classic “forest floor”, dry herb and earth character of a well-aged Tempranillo. A true Spanish masterpiece.
NEW ARRIVALS:
Graffigna 2010 Grand Reserve Malbec (Pedernal Valley, Argentina) $19.99
Graffigna is regarded as one of Argentina’s foremost producers of Malbec, the country’s signature varietal. The Grand Reserve offers bold blackberry and dark plum fruit aromas, and follows up with a vivid mouthful of ripe black fruit plus accent of violets and cedar.
Thomas Schmitt 2011 Riesling Kabinett (Mosel Valley, Germany) $14.99
This is a classically crafted Kabinett from Germany’s renowned Mosel River region. True to style, it’s a pure, refined Riesling, with poise and balance. It offers a slightly honeyed nose, and follows with luscious pear and apricot flavors and a hint of the mineral character the Mosel is famed for.
Truchard 2009 Merlot (Carneros/Napa Valley) $24.99
Truchard’s Carneros estate consists of 380 acres of gently rolling hills, with a variety of soils: clay, shale, sandstone and limestone. This unique combination of terroir, geology and marine-moderated temperatures makes this an ideal location for fine wine-growing. This Merlot offers bright aromas and flavors of blueberry, plum and black cherry, with pleasant spice accents.
Clos de L’Oratoire Des Papes 2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Rhone Valley, France) $39.99
This classic Rhone Valley blend begins with black cherry and raspberry aromas enlivened with zesty mineral and floral accents, plus a hint of baking spices. On the palate, vibrant red berry flavors offer superb richness, balance and depth, gliding to a long, elegant finish.
Cheers!
