THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:
La Soraia 2014 Gavi di Gavi (Piedmont, Italy) $18.99
Gavi comes from a small growing area in northwestern Italy near the city of Genoa on the steep slopes of the Apennines Mountains. It’s made from the native Cortese grape, and offers a spicy nose of almonds and citrus fruit, with a fresh, delicate and thoroughly dry palate.
Cloudline 2015 Pinot Noir (Willamette Valley) $17.99
The Cloudline offers scents of sweet Oregon blackberries and Rainier cherries, plus hints of cedar forest and a faint note of rose petal. The palate offers rich, vivid flavors of freshly picked wild berries and exotic Asian spices, yet the wine displays elegance and balance.
Woodwork 2013 Red Blend (Central Coast) $14.99
Woodwork wines celebrate the craft of winemaking. Each small batch of wine highlights the unique influence of oak aging to bring out a varietal’s natural characteristics. This one blends the four classic Bordeaux grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec, all aged in French white oak.
Banfi 2013 Rosso di Montalcino (Tuscany, Italy) $19.99
Rosso di Montalcino is often referred to as “baby Brunello.” It’s aged less than its elder, way more expensive counterpart – 12 months in barrel plus at least 6 months in bottle before release. It offers a dry, round, velvety palate profile and a generous body; characteristics similar to the renowned Brunello di Montalcino.
Bogle 2013 Phantom California Red $19.99
Bogle’s Phantom Red is a blend of Petite Sirah, Zinfandel and Mourvedre grapes sourced from really old vines. It offers concentrated red raspberry, dark chocolate and red and black currant flavors, framed by accents of cedar and vanilla. This is one big, bold mouthful of fruit…
Quilt 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) $39.99
Quilt gets its name from the sourcing of its fruit: the grapes come from a patchwork of premium Napa Valley vineyards in the Oakville, St. Helena, Atlas Peak, Calistoga and Howell Mountain growing areas. Aged in French oak for 20 months, it offers a richness and depth of flavor that is truly remarkable.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
Far Niente 2015 Chardonnay (Napa Valley) $59.99
This renowned Napa Valley Chardonnay has aromas of honeysuckle, melon, peach, pear and vanilla. The bouquet is framed by a hint of French oak, and a toasty/yeasty essence. In the mouth, this shows a creamy character and lush, silky richness, with flavors of pear, nectarine, peach and sweet toasty oak. The finish is clean and fresh, with vibrant acidity.
Giesen 2016 Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough, New Zealand) $9.99
The Giesen 2016 is lively and refreshing, a textbook Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. It has an intense bouquet of citrus fruits and freshly picked herbs. Crisp and dry on the palate, this delivers pure, deliciously tangy flavors of passionfruit, grapefruit and lime.
Gérard Bertrand 2014 Corbières (Languedoc, France) $18.99
This red sings of southern France. The nose is redolent of violets, dried herbs, cassis and raspberry. The palate is smooth and enticing, with black cherry, currant and raspberry fruit flavors edged with hints of violets, herbs and spice. It ends with a bright, persistent finish.
Director’s Cut 2012 Cinema Red (Sonoma County) $34.99
Made with fruit sourced from the Dry Creek, Alexander and Knight’s Valley, Cinema is a wine with superb balance and concentration. The nose has a rich fragrance of blackberry pie, cassis, cherries, cigar box, vanilla and dried flowers followed by lush layers of fruit set upon a velvety palate. Nuances of ripe cherries, dark chocolate and sweet, smoky oak are elevated by a long and spicy finish.
Cheers!
