Greetings from the Wine Cellar:

 

The 2014 Summer Jazz Series continues this week as renowned local piano stylist Jimmy Caves performs with the Yuma Jazz Company Quintet just down the road at Lutes Casino (221 S. Main) right here in Historic Downtown Yuma.  The show goes on this Friday, July 11th at 7 PM and continues until 9 PM; and as always, no admission charge.  Jimmy has impressed and entertained audiences in a variety of venues and settings since the 1970s – always in his own impeccable, engaging style.  It’ll be a great way to complete your evening here in Old Town after wine tasting at the Cellar!

 

THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:

 

Miraflores 2012 Viognier (El Dorado County)    $18.99
This opens with scents of peach and pear fruit, mixing with hints of orange blossom. The enticing aromas introduce a similar flavor profile, enhanced with a silky texture and a mouthwatering lime-zest quality. It superbly melds lush fruit with light floral tones to create a distinctively crisp and superbly refreshing white.

 

La Mano 2009 Mencía Roble (Bierzo, Spain)    $9.99
The Mencía grape is native to northwestern Spain’s Bierzo region.  It produces medium-bodied, spicy reds with an alluring mix of rose petals, cracked pepper, roasted red pepper and berry fruit.  It was aged three months in American oak to provide greater depth and complexity.

 

Argentiera 2010 Poggio al Ginepri (Tuscany, Italy)    $17.99
Poggio al Ginepri is a Tuscan blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot.  The wine opens with aromas of crushed berries and fresh-turned earth, and then delivers a mouthful of pure red cherry and black raspberry fruit on a dense, silky texture.

 

Wolf Blass 2010 President’s Selection Shiraz (South Australia)    $19.99
W-B’s President’s Selection offers intense aromas of rich dark berries and plums, layered with underlying notes of fragrant spice and dark chocolate.  It’s rich and round on the palate, with plenty of bright, fresh berry fruit, finely balanced tannins and well-integrated oak.

 

Chateau St. Jean 2010 Merlot (Sonoma County)    $22.99
Aromas of sweet black cherry, black plum and toasted almonds burst from the glass of this Sonoma Merlot.  These bright fruit characters carry over onto the palate and mingle with notes of blackberry, chocolate and cedar.  Polished tannins carry it to a smooth finish.

 

Trivento 2011 Golden Reserve Malbec (Mendoza, Argentina)    $24.99
Trivento’s Golden Reserve offers rich aromas of black cherry, blackberry, black olives, violets and fennel.  The palate is smooth and plush, with vivid layers of cherry, fig and raspberry fruit followed by cocoa, cedar and licorice notes on a muscular finish.

 

NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:

 

Gianfranco Bovio 2008 Langhe Nebbiolo Annunziata (Piedmont, Italy)    $24.99
This single-vineyard Nebbiolo opens with a delicate, alluring bouquet of raspberries and strawberries.  The palate displays classic varietal characteristics of juicy red cherries accented by complex accents of herbs, earth and cedar, carried on an elegantly smooth and silky tannic frame.

 

Shoo Fly 2013 Shiraz (South Australia)    $14.99
Shoo Fly opens with hints of spicy red berry fruits, plums and mint. In the mouth it’s a succulent thunderbolt of pure Shiraz, right to the last sip.  Showing brawn as well as finesse, it culminates with an irresistable “have another glass” finish.

 

Full Sail Imperial Stout, Bourbon Barrel Aged (Hood River, Oregon)    $12.99
A deep and complex brew, this is black as night, with a strong roasted malt character.  Aged for one full year in Kentucky Bourbon barrels from Makers Mark, Heaven Hill and Four Roses, this offers rich, bourbon-tinged notes of vanilla and caramel that caress the palate.  It’s one smooth, satisfying Imperial Stout.
