07/18/2016 Newsletter
Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
This Friday evening, July 22nd, the Yuma Jazz Company Quintet gets together again just down the street at Lutes’ Casino with the fifth installment of the 2016 Lutes’ Summer Jazz Series. The special guest performer this time will be trumpeter Brian Stewart. Brian has played with a number of groups over the years, most recently locally with the Yuma Big Band. As always, the show will go from 7 to 9 PM (with no cover), presented by Lutes’ and sponsored by Yuma’s Public Radio Station KAWC. It’s another great summer evening’s entertainment here in Old Town, so head on down to Lutes’ after you finish your wine tasting at the Cellar!
THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:
Sequoia Grove 2013 Chardonnay (Napa Valley) $24.99
This Napa Chard offers aromas of guava, tropical fruit and pear followed by crème brulee and marshmallow, with lemon peel and brioche notes in the background. The palate offers a fine balance of delicacy and richness, with a mineral edge framing the creamy finish.
MacMurray Ranch 2013 Pinot Noir (Central Coast) $15.99
Fragrant, floral and redolent of dark cherry fruit, this wine exhibits all the delicacy and allure of this classic varietal. Notes of rose petal, caramel and forest floor weave through a rich black fruit core. The palate is finely balanced and silky, framed by soft tannins.
Bodegas Príncipe de Viana 2013 Graciano (Navarra, Spain) $12.99
This 100% Graciano is from Navarra, a region that lies right next to far-more-famous Rioja. A little-known native Spanish varietal, it makes a lively and enjoyable red with a nose of black raspberries and spicy oak. Flavors of ripe cherry and black currant fruit come to a peppery finish.
Smith & Hook 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon (Central Coast) $17.99
Fragrant aromas of plum and black cherry find a perfect balance with hints of vanilla, cola, cloves and cocoa dust. On the heels of all the aromatic intensity come flavors of boysenberry, black currant, dark plum and mocha. The wine has supple tannins and a generous finish.
Luigi Righetti 2011 Valpolicella Ripasso Campolieti (Veneto, Italy) $19.99
The Campolieti is a full-bodied, velvety and harmonious red, with an enticing bouquet of dark cherry fruit and cinnamon-tinged spice. A rich, sumptuous palate of ripe black cherry and plum fruit is accented with hints of dark chocolate and toasted almonds.
Hess Collection 2012 Mt. Veeder 19 Block Cuvée (Napa Valley) $34.99
This is so named for the 19 vineyard blocks on the Hess Veeder Summit Vineyard, located at an altitude of almost 2,000 feet above the Napa Valley floor. It’s a fleshy and concentrated red, with ample tannins and black cherry, wild berry and cassis flavors. A blend of 60% Malbec, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Syrah.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
La Braccesca 2012 Vino Nobile de Montepulciano (Tuscany, Italy) $24.99
This Vino Nobile has aromas of crushed cherries, plus undertones of coffee and fennel on the nose. The palate is fresh and balanced, with velvety tannins that are wrapped around a juicy, fruity core. Black cherry and raspberry fruit flavors show intriguing hints of spice and mint.
Riondo Prosecco Spago Nero (Veneto, Italy) $14.99
Riondo Spago Nero is made with 100% Prosecco grapes, but unlike most Italian Proseccos it’s not a sparkling wine. It’s a floral, fruity and lighter-bodied white with a pleasant touch of spritz, and just a hint of sweetness that’s balanced with deliciously refreshing acidity.
Alpine Brewing Mandarin Nectar (San Diego County) $7.99
Mandarin Nectar is a fresh, effervescent golden ale enhanced by additions of orange blossom honey, orange zest and coriander. A light degree of malty sweetness heightens the honey character and Amarillo hops add a pleasantly bitter edge. Like a cool breeze through the citrus trees, this is a clean and refreshing brew – perfect for a summer day!
Cheers!
