Greetings from the Wine Cellar:

This Friday evening, July 24th, the Yuma Jazz Company Quintet presents the fifth installment of the 2015 Lutes’ Summer Jazz Series  just a little ways down Main Street at Lutes’ Casino, joined by popular local duo Jason & Elle.  Jason Arviso provides both guitar and vocals, and Eloisa Arviso also does vocals as well as tenor sax.   The show is from 7 to 9 PM, with no cover charge, presented by Lutes’ and sponsored by Yuma’s Public Radio Station KAWC.  Another great reason to venture downtown on a mellow summer evening, right up there with wine tasting at the Cellar!

THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:

Meiomi 2013 California Chardonnay    $19.99
Meiomi Chardonnay embodies the character and spirit of California’s most notable coastal wine regions. Unifying the unique terroir and qualities of Santa Barbara, Sonoma and Monterey, this offers an elegant balance of spice and fruit, richness and yet restraint.

Davis Bynum 2012 Jane’s Vineyard Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley)    $34.99
Davis Bynum was the first winery to produce a single-vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, way back in 1973.  The Jane’s Vineyard 2012 offers a fragrance of mint and savory red fruit, with hints of earth and black tea.  On the palate, smooth tannins underlie a juicy zing of acidity and elegant dark fruit flavors.

Sangiovese di San Marino 2010 Sangiovese (Republic of San Marino)    $14.99
This Sangiovese from the tiny Republic of San Marino in the north of the Italian peninsula is a textbook example of the varietal.  Enticing, uplifted aromas of spicy cherry with subtle herbal tones give way to a palate of sweet dark cherry and currant fruit, with firm, drying tannins.

Trivento 2011 Amado Sur Malbec (Mendoza, Argentina)    $14.99
Trivento’s Amado Sur begins with an aromatic, enticing nose of jammy dark fruit and baking spices.  The palate offers plenty of rich, luscious fruit accented with a touch of licorice and a touch of dark chocolate.  It ends with a lengthy finish full of fruit and smoky spice.

Wente 2011 Sandstone Merlot (Livermore Valley)    $15.99
This estate-grown Merlot is sourced from hillside as well as valley floor vineyards, and was aged 16 months in both French and American oak barrels.  While lighter in structure than a Cabernet Sauvignon, it combines firm yet supple tannins with a rich and satisfying dark fruit character.

Miraflores 2012 Estate Syrah (El Dorado County)    $24.99
This Syrah comes from a winery located in California’s Sierra Foothills region, owned by Yuma’s Dr Victor Alvarez. It reflects his passion for the Syrah varietal, offering rich, exuberant blackberry fruit that’s beautifully accented by complex notes of earth and spice.

NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:

Barón Balch’é 2013 RB Red Blend (Guadelupe Valley, Mexico)    $24.99
The Barón Balch’é RB is a Baja blend of Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Carignan and Grenache, all estate-grown in Mexico’s Guadelupe Valley.  The wine offers a robust palate of rich, ripe dark fruit, with a complex backdrop of spicy nuances and toasty oak.

Sobon Estate 2013 Viognier (Amador County)    $14.99
Dry and full-bodied, this finely structured version of Viognier has subtle fruit aromas of melon and peach, with similar flavors accented by a light note of vanilla, a firm texture and clean finish.  A substantial white, this should pair beautifully with seafood dishes, salads and creamy sauces.

Bodegas Castaño 2012 Solanera Viña Viejas (Yecla, Spain)    $14.99
The Solanera is a blend of 70% Mourvedre, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Grenache from very old, low-yielding vines. The wine was aged for ten months in a combination of French and American oak.  It’s rich and ripe, reflecting a classic Mediterranean character.

Hangar 24 Chocolate Porter (Redlands, California)    $7.99
Rich and decadent, this porter is perfect for sipping at day’s end or to accompany robustly flavored foods.  The intense and roasty flavor comes from chocolate malts and raw cocoa nibs. Whole vanilla beans added after fermentation give complexity.

Cheers!
