Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
The Lutes’ 2014 Summer Jazz Series, a great addition to our summer entertainment scene here in Old Town, continues with a performance this Friday evening, July 25th by the Yuma Jazz Company Quintet, sans guest artists. This time it will be just the Quintet, performing original tunes from their three CDs along with well-known favorites in the realm of Latin, classic and contemporary jazz. These guys have been performing together for over ten years, and it shows. They put on a great live show, no matter what kind of music you usually prefer! They’ll start at 7PM and play until 9 right down the street at Lutes’ Casino (221 S Main). As always, there’s no cover charge for the performance, presented by Lutes’ and sponsored by Yuma’s Public Radio station, KAWC FM/AM. Hope I can get out of here in time to catch a little bit of the show…
THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:
Benziger 2011 Sauvignon Blanc (Lake County/Sonoma County) $12.99
Stainless steel fermentation preserves the bright, crisp style of this Sauvignon Blanc. Lightly herbal aromas introduce flavors of citrus along with notes of melon, guava and passionfruit. The tangy fruit flavors are enhanced by a fine mineral edge and refreshing acidity.
Tormaresca 2013 Fichimori (Puglia, Italy) $15.99
This unique Italian chilled red is fresh and vibrant, not at all sweet, and very dynamic. From the tartly aromatic opening notes of red cherry, pomegranate and rose petals to the clean, refreshing and balanced fruit palate, this is as enjoyable as a rosé and yet much fuller and more satisfying as a summer sipper.
Bridlewood 2011 Blend 175 (Central Coast) $12.99
Blend 175 is a mix of red Rhone grape varietals from California’s Central Coast. The palate offers classic southern Rhone Valley flavors of ripe red raspberries and spice. Soft, smooth tannins create a silky mouthfeel.
Sebastiani 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma County) $15.99
Sebastiani’s Sonoma Cabernet offers fine depth and complexity. The wine opens with alluring aromas of black cherries, herbs, black tea and coconut. The palate is packed with flavors of ripe blackberries, spicy vanilla and toasty oak. A balanced finish is framed by firm tannins.
Catena 2012 Vista Flores Malbec (Mendoza, Argentina) $15.99
The grapes for this wine were sourced from the high-altitude Vista Flores region of Mendoza. True to the varietal, it’s a juicy, mouth-filling red with deep, dark flavors of plum, currant and blackberry. Complex pepper and spice accents enliven the finish.
Mollydooker 2013 The Boxer Shiraz (South Australia) $28.99
The Boxer is a rich and complex Shiraz, with a superb mix of sweet ripe fruit and powerful tannins. It delivers an effusive mouthful of raspberry, plum and pepper-spice flavors that are vivid and lingering. The density on the palate doesn’t get in the way of all the fruit and spice, and the finish just keeps on going…
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
Valle delle Rose 2007 Morrelino di Scansano (Tuscany, Italy) $22.99
In Tuscany’s coastal region of Maremma, the Sangiovese varietal is called Morellino. Made with grapes grown on the slopes surrounding the hill town of Scansano, this offers bright red cherry and currant fruit edged by notes of violets and cinnamon. The palate has bright acidity, framed with smooth, silky tannins.
Gabbiano Moscato d’Asti (Piedmont, Italy) $11.99
Gabbiano Moscato d’Asti is straw-yellow in color with a bubbling effervescence – a perfect example of Italian Moscato. Overflowing with luscious aromas of ripe orchard fruits, citrus blossom and fresh herbs, this offers fine complexity. It’s pleasantly sweet, with a crisp, elegant and very persistent finish.
Howe Sound Brewing King Heffy (British Columbia, Canada) $14.99
King Heffy is a high gravity hefeweizen, or wheat beer, brewed with pale and Munich malted barley and white wheat. Special German hefe yeast imparts a unique banana, clove and vanilla character to this deliciously refreshing brew.
Cheers!
