THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:
Hess Collection 2017 Chardonnay (Napa Valley) $19.99 The 175 acre Su’skol Vineyard is planted with nine distinct clones of Chardonnay, in order to produce fruit with pleasing acidity and precise balance. Crisp and clean yet still nicely rich, this wine opens with a lush bouquet of honeysuckle and offers pure flavors of ripe Golden Delicious apple, white pear and tropical fruits.
Hearst Ranch Winery 2017 Julia Rosé (Paso Robles) $16.99 The Julia Rose is particularly stunning in the glass. The bright salmon color heralds deep raspberry, rose petal and peach flavors, with refreshing acidity. A steely mineral edge extends a clean and zesty finish.
Angeline 2017 Reserve Pinot Noir (Mendocino County) $15.99 This is sourced from premium vineyards located in northern California’s Mendocino County. There, cool and foggy coastal influences help produce a classically styled and velvety Pinot Noir with a delicately spicy bouquet, keenly balanced acidity and rich dark berry fruit.
Corvo 2016 Rosso (Sicily, Italy) $11.99 Corvo Rosso is a blend of the native Sicilian varietal Nero d’Avola along with some Merlot. It’s an aromatic and pleasantly fruity yet properly dry red; an easy sipper but one with more than enough complexity to make a fine accompaniment at the dinner table.
Route Stock 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) $24.99 An aromatic nose showcases a variety of dark fruits plus hints of cedar, tobacco and violets. In the mouth the wine offers a rush of ripe plum, currant and black cherry fruit, supported with subtle oak tones and soft, approachable tannins. Vanilla and kirsch notes make an appearance on a lengthy finish.
Finca Nueva 2010 Rioja Reserva (Rioja, Spain) $27.99 This Reserva is a superb representation of what a top-level Rioja has that no other region or country can offer: a remarkable combination of fresh, bright fruit and toasty vanilla notes along with the classic “forest floor”, dried herb and earth character of a fine, well-aged Tempranillo.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
San Felice 2015 Il Grigio Chianti Classico Riserva (Tuscany, Italy) $27.99 San Felice’s Il Grigio offers richness, complexity and elegance that few Chiantis can rival. The nose exudes aromas of sweet ripe cherry fruit plus complex hints of violets, spices and dark chocolate. The palate is plush and silky but well structured, with generous flavors of dark cherries, plums and a touch of sweet licorice.
Athena 2017 California Cabernet Sauvignon $12.99 This California Cabernet is bold, rich and silky; a juicy mouthful of fresh, ripe berry and black currant fruit flavors. The fruit is framed with firm yet polished tannins plus notes of licorice, toasted oak and dark chocolate at the finish.
Chronic Cellars 2017 Sofa King Bueno (Paso Robles) $22.99 Sofa King Bueno is a blend of Syrah, Grenache, Petite Sirah, Tannat and Mourvèdre. On the nose, a medley of fresh black fruit aromas swirls along with a hint of cinnamon spice. The palate is full and rich, leading off with a blast of ripe black plum and currant fruit enlivened with accents of toast and caramel..
Cheers!
