THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:
Kettmeir 2015 Müller-Thurgau (Alto Adige, Italy) $17.99
Kettmeir has produced wines in the lush northern Italian Alpine region of Alto Adige since 1919. Müller-Thurgau is a hybrid varietal created in the late 1800’s. The wine offers floral scents of acacia and a whiff of stone fruit on the nose. A vibrant palate offers juicy citrus, white peach, melon and a touch of nutmeg.
Match Book 2015 Rosé of Tempranillo (Dunnigan Hills) $10.99
This estate-bottled rosé offers aromas of cherry, lychee and cream soda, followed by juicy flavors of strawberries and cherries and a lively citrus finish that really wakes up the palate. It’s a great wine to share with good friends at a tailgate, picnic or a casual dinner poolside.
Sartori 2012 Pinot Nero (Delle Venezie, Italy) $12.99
This Northern Italian Pinot Noir shows a clear, bright ruby in the glass, with a violet edge. The bouquet offers scents of black cherries, clove and chocolate, with a touch of spicy vanilla. The palate is dry and well-balanced, a good blend of fruit and acidity.
Lindeman’s 2015 Gentleman’s Collection Red (California) $15.99
Gentleman’s Collection Red is a dense and juicy, decidedly fruit-forward California blend of Petite Sirah, Zinfandel and Merlot, sourced from select Central Coast and North Coast vineyards. It’s a palate-pleasing sipper with no hard edges and a fresh, fruit-filled finish.
Twenty Rows 2012 Merlot (Napa Valley) $22.99
This is an elegant, balanced Merlot made with fruit sourced from prime Napa Valley vineyards. It opens with a rich bouquet of black cherries, plus a note of vanilla from oak barrel aging. A vibrant fruit character of black cherry and wild berry is framed by smooth and supple tannins.
El Enemigo 2012 Malbec (Mendoza, Argentina) $24.99
Deep purple in color, El Enemigo offers an expressive perfume of balsam wood, old leather, spice-box tones and black cherry fruit. It’s big and bold, yet very smooth-textured on the palate, with lush dark fruit and savory spice flavors plus a long, fruit-filled finish.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
Morgan 2014 Highlands Chardonnay (Santa Lucia Highlands) $21.99
On the nose, aromas of spicy vanilla and crème brulee from French oak aging mix with bright citrus and tropical fruit scents. In the mouth a quick note of green apple leads on to fresh Meyer lemon, pear and apricot flavors. A rich, creamy mouthfeel is enhanced by a subtle touch of toasted oak, along with a crisply dry mineral character.
Francis Coppola 2014 Black Label Claret (Sonoma County) $15.99
Coppola’s Black Label Claret is a red blend crafted in the style of the great wines of the Medoc region of Bordeaux, France. Mostly based on Cabernet Sauvignon, it also includes some Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. It’s a wine of fine depth and elegance, with a rich and lingering finish.
Mazzei 2013 Ser Lapo Chianti Classico Riserva (Tuscany, Italy) $24.99
This Riserva offers inviting aromas of black cherries, plums and sweet spices, with notes of rose petals and cracked pepper. It’s elegant and silky on the palate, with abundant dark fruit flavors and the classic Chianti character of old leather. Firm, drying tannins frame a lingering finish.
Stone Brewing Woot Stout (Escondido, California) $9.99
Stone Farking Wheaton W00tstout 2017 is a 13% ABV Imperial Stout that’s brewed with rye, wheat, malt and pecans and aged in used Kentucky bourbon barrels.
