Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
The Lutes’ Summer Jazz Series continues this week here in Old Town just down the street at Lutes’ Casino (221 S. Main), with the renowned Yuma Jazz Company Quintet performing live again on Friday, August 9th from 7:00 to 9:00 PM . This week’s show will feature a special guest performance by popular local duo Jason & Elle. As always, there’s no cover charge for the show, presented by Lutes’ Casino and sponsored by Yuma’s public radio station KAWC FM/AM. For once I actually got out of here in time to take in part of their most recent show last month, and I’m telling you, these dudes are really good. Great jazz in a fun setting with lots of good food and drink at hand – don’t miss out on it. Summer will be over before you know it!

Navarro’s Methode a l’Ancienne bottling offers enticing layers of Bing cherries, anise, cola and mint. On the palate, the wine displays rich layers of raspberry, Santa Rosa plum and morel mushroom, all of it underscored by balanced acidity that carries to a long and satisfying finish.
Esprit du Rhône 2009 Côtes du Rhône Reserve (Rhone Valley, France) $11.99
Esprit du Rhône displays a beautiful ruby color. The nose exudes aromas of red fruits and spice which carry through to the palate. In the mouth it’s balanced and fresh, with sandalwood, dried cherry and black tea notes laced with a streak of juicy red raspberry.
Ferrari-Carano 2010 Siena (Sonoma County) $19.99
The Siena opens with rich black cherry aromas, plus subtle hints of fennel and licorice. Ripe, juicy red fruit flavors follow the nose, shaped by a pleasant acidity and soft tannins in this beautifully structured ‘Tuscan-style’ red. Tart cherry flavors linger on the finish, accented by a touch of dark chocolate. A proprietary blend of Sangiovese and Malbec.
Sterling Vineyards 2009 Limited Release Red Blend (North Coast) $19.99
Sterling’s 2009 ‘Limited Release’ Red is balanced and elegant, with blackberry, black raspberry and currant fruit and a pleasant note of dark chocolate. It’s sleek, smooth and supple on the palate, with complex notes of cedar and eucalyptus that enliven the finish.
Fess Parker The Big Easy 2009 Syrah (Santa Barbara County) $29.99
This Santa Barbara County Syrah offers a lovely nose of blackberry, black currant, vanilla, a dash of pepper and a hint of lavender. It’s rich and full-bodied with silky-smooth tannins and abundant dark fruits, edged by pleasant pepper and cinnamon notes.
NEW ARRIVALS:
Michele Castellani 2008 Amarone della Valpolicella Colle Cristi (Veneto, Italy) $59.99
Dense and concentrated, yet beautifully balanced and well integrated, this is classic Amarone. Lush aromas of plums, dates and toasted oak greet the nose. It’s rich and full on the palate, with layers of ripe, raisiny fruit and super-silky tannins to give it grip on the lengthy finish.
Viña Eguía 2007 Rioja Reserva (Rioja, Spain) $14.99
On the nose, this Reserva offers exotic aromas of vanilla, clove and cinnamon. A smooth, velvety palate has abundant dark cherry and black plum fruit flavors, plus exotic hints of fresh earth, tobacco and Indian spice that carry to the finish.
Siduri 2011 Pinot Noir (Willamette Valley) $21.99
Supple and nicely ripe, this Oregon Pinot begins with heady aromas of blueberries, black cherries and violets. In the mouth, the generous dark cherry and raspberry fruit is shaded by white pepper and spice notes that linger enticingly on the clean finish.
Rogue Brewing Yellow Snow IPA (Newport, Oregon) $17.99 (growler)
Yellow Snow is an IPA lover’s IPA. It pours with a citrus explosion that creates a thick, fluffy head. An intense hoppy character at the beginning is evidenced by bold citrus and piney accents. The clean and satisfyingly dry finish offers a fine, lingering bitter edge.
Cheers!
