08/27/2018 Newsletter
Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
This Friday evening, August 31st, the Yuma Jazz Company Quintet will liven things up down the street at Lutes’ Casino with the final installment of the 2018 Lutes’ Summer Jazz Series. The Quintet’s special guest performer will be vocalist Jennifer Wayman, who has performed locally with the Arizona Western College Jazz Band as well as the Yuma Big Band. The show will go from 7 to 9 (with no cover), presented by Lutes’ and sponsored by Yuma’s Public Radio Station KAWC. It’s a great evening’s entertainment as summer starts to mercifully fade, so keep it in mind for after your wine tasting at the Cellar.
And of course this weekend will bring us the Labor Day Holiday. Don’t forget to stop by the Wine Cellar to stock up on some of our great wines and craft beers to help celebrate the holiday if you’re staying around town (or even if you’re not). And have a great holiday weekend everyone!
THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:
Licia 2016 Albariño (Rías Baixas, Spain) $14.99 This crisply dry and tangy native Spanish white offers delicate scents of citrus, dried flowers and herbs. Vividly etched white peach, pear, citrus and tropical fruit flavors mingle on the palate. A fresh and lively acidity carries this along to a clean, mouthwatering finish.
Arizona Stronghold 2016 Nachise Red (Arizona) $19.99 Nachise is a Rhone-style blend of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre. Rich aromas of ripe red raspberries and plums mixed with notes of juniper, desert herbs, and cedar emerge on the nose. Flavors of dark cherries and currants are mixed with incense and black tea elements, finishing with a light hint of oak.
Chateau de Fontenille 2014 Grand Vin de Bordeaux (Bordeaux, France) $14.99 A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, this Bordeaux red offers a bouquet of blackberry and black currant fruit along with savory accents of toasted oak. The palate is balanced and refined, with firm tannins and pleasant hints of espresso and spice.
Prats & Symington 2015 Prazo de Roriz (Douro Valley, Portugal) $15.99 This deep, dark red shows fine, grippy tannins and rich, juicy blueberry fruit flavors on the entry. Black fruits, licorice and spices follow on the mid-palate, leading to a savory finish despite the ripeness of the fruit, and ending with a nice touch of creaminess.
Penfolds Max’s Shiraz-Cabernet (South Australia) $19.99 This deep magenta-hued blend of 70% Shiraz and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a nose of blackberry and powdered earth. White pepper graces its inky espresso structure, inching its way through bold notes of plum and beetroot. Violets chime in mid-palate, while a meaty grilled sensation is spiced to the “max” on the finish.
Caymus Red Schooner Malbec Voyage 5 (Mendoza, Argentina) $39.99 This wine offers evocative scents of dark fruits, layered with cassis and fresh earth. Lush fruit flavors of ripe dark plums and cherries are edged with accents of Asian spice and cinnamon. The tannins add both structure and a velvety softness. Lingering flavors of rich dark fruits and chocolate swirl on the finish.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
Fonseca 2015 Guimaraens Vintage Port (Douro Valley, Portugal) $69.99 Intoxicating aromas of crushed berries, lilac, violets and mineral mingle on the nose, and are followed by accents of peppercorns and Indian spice in this powerful Vintage Port. On the palate, the wine shows tremendous depth, with medium sweetness, gripping tannins and a lengthy, chewy finish.
Donnafugata 2017 Anthilia (Sicily, Italy) $15.99 Primarily based on the native Cataratto grape varietal, Anthilia is bright and juicy, with heady aromas of fragrant white flower, citrus and ripe orchard fruits. Mirroring the nose, the refreshing palate delivers crisp apple, pear and nectarine flavors plus a savory hint of Mediterranean garrigue.
Huyghe Brewery Delirium Nocturnum (Belgium) $14.99 Delirium Nocturnum is a rich and complex strong dark ale. The nose exudes aromas of ripe dark fruits, vibrant spices (think cloves), molasses and sweet, chocolate-tinged malts. It’s full and rich on the palate, offering the perfect combination of malts and dark fruit flavors complemented by a fine, spice-driven zest.
Cheers!
