09/08/2015 Newsletter
Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
Hopefully everyone had an enjoyable Labor Day weekend – we’re now well into September and cooler days are inevitably heading our way as summer in the Great Southwest finally starts winding down. We’re not quite there yet, but the days are getting shorter and the heat seems to be fading a bit everyday, just like the daylight. That’s definitely worthy of raising a toast to, preferably with a nice taste of wine at the Wine Cellar. Here’s to Fall 2015!
THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:
Austin Hope 2012 Treana White (Central Coast) $17.99
Always among the finest Rhone-style white wines that California has to offer, the Treana White is superbly rich and expressive, yet the intense and almost honeyed flavors of apricot, peach and almond are reined in by a crisp, refreshing acidity that keeps it light and elegant.
Marcarini 2013 Lasarin Nebbiolo (Piedmont, Italy) $19.99
The Marcarini family has made wines in the Piedmont since the 1800’s. Their Lasarin is made from younger Nebbiolo vines in the famous Cru’s of La Morra and Montaldo. It has the typical Nebbiolo fragrance, finesse and acidity, but with a pleasant, fruity freshness. In the mouth it’s dry and balanced.
19 Crimes 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon (South Eastern Australia) $11.99
This Cabernet opens with a spicy blackberry bouquet, edged with notes of spearmint and toasty oak. It’s a lush, smooth and balanced red in the mouth, with an abundance of ripe dark fruit supported by smooth, soft tannins.
Valley of the Moon 2011 Orbiter Red (Sonoma County) $15.99
The Orbiter combines Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Syrah to make a wine with ripe, plush fruit and supple tannins. Aromas of raspberry and plum swirl amid savory spice notes. Ripe blackberry and black cherry fruit flavors blend beautifully in a polished, long and satisfying finish.
Chateau St. Jean 2008 Merlot (Sonoma County) $22.99
Aromas of sweet black cherry, black plum and toasted almonds burst from the glass of this Sonoma Merlot. These bright fruit characters carry over onto the palate and mingle with notes of blackberry, chocolate and cedar. Polished tannins carry it to a smooth finish.
Bodega Renacer 2011 Enamore (Mendoza, Argentina) $24.99
This Amarone-influenced Argentinean red offers opulent, complex aromas of dried cherry, raisin, spice and licorice with nuances of dried herbs and a savory earthiness. The palate is rich and robust, with flavors that mirror the nose, with stronger accents of spice and clove. A long, persistent finish completes this smoothly seductive wine.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
Sebastiani 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma County) $15.99
Sebastiani’s Sonoma Cabernet shows fine depth and complexity. The wine starts off alluring notes of ripe black cherries, herbs, black tea and toasted coconut. The palate is packed with flavors of ripe blackberries, spicy vanilla and toasted oak. A balanced, lengthy finish is framed with structured tannins.
Lincourt 2013 Pinot Noir, Lindsay’s Vineyard (Santa Rita Hills) $23.99
Lincourt Lindsay’s Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir is from a hilly, cool-climate site near the Pacific Ocean, a perfect place to grow Pinot Noir. This wine offers a juicy palate of black cherry and raspberry fruit edged with hints of spice, herbs, earthy cedar and sweet tobacco leaf.
Fizz 56 Brachetto Sparkling Wine (Piedmont, Italy) $18.99
Fizz 56 Brachetto is a sweet and sparkling red wine from the Piedmont region of Italy. As an apéritif, a complement to dessert, or a cocktail ingredient, Fizz 56 Brachetto is a deliciously irresistible way to celebrate any occasion, big or small. So pop its cork and enjoy the 56 million bubbles in every bottle!
Tenet Wines 2013 The Pundit Syrah (Columbia Valley) $21.99
The Pundit is a collaboration between Washington State’s Chateau Ste. Michelle and acclaimed winemaker Michel Gassier of France’s Rhone Valley. The wine displays classic varietal flavors of black raspberries, violets, spice and vanilla bean on an elegant and seamless texture. Ripe and round, this wine is way too easy to drink…
Cheers!
