Greetings from the Wine Cellar:
This coming Saturday, October 22nd, it’s time for another Saturday Afternoon Beer Tasting at the Old Town Wine Cellar! Come raise a glass to the indisputable arrival of another great fall season here in the great Desert Southwest – we’ll get started at noon and go until closing at 6PM, with six selections from our extensive lineup of American craft beers and imported brews. Hope you can make it!
THIS WEEK’S WINE TASTING:
Skyfall Vineyard 2014 Pinot Gris (Columbia Valley) $14.99
This Washington State Pinot Gris gives a first impression of restrained pineapple, peach, apricot, and light floral aromas on top of a clean flinty note. The palate offers bright flavors of stone fruits and citrus, with a finely etched minerality that frames a crisp and refreshing finish.
Pali Wine Company 2013 Huntington Pinot Noir (Santa Barbara County) $19.99
Huntington is crafted from premium Pinot Noir fruit sourced from vineyards throughout the Santa Barbara coastal region, and then carefully blended to create the best expression of the unique character of that area. It was aged in French oak barrels (30% new) for 12 months.
Vigneti del Salento 2012 I Muri Negroamaro (Puglia, Italy) $14.99
The baking hot sun of the Italian south comes through in this rich and earthy red, with its smoky nose and robust palate redolent of dark plums, stewed figs and peppery spice. Negroamaro is an ancient varietal native to Puglia, a fantastic partner with richly flavored Italian dishes.
Skyfall Vineyard 2013 Merlot (Columbia Valley) $15.99
The Skyfall Vineyard Merlot is a savory red with a complex bouquet of ripe dark cherry, pomegranate and plum scents, followed by intricately woven flavors of raspberries and black plums. Smooth, supple tannins carry all that generous fruit to a long, silky finish.
Ironstone 2010 Reserve Cabernet Franc (Sierra Foothills) $19.99
Ironstone Reserve Cab Franc is a full-bodied, solid red with aromas hinting at red currants and lavender. Fleshy flavors of juicy blackberries and plums are beautifully mixed with subtle touches of sweet oak and cedar. It’s a beautiful rendition of this sorely neglected varietal.
Prisoner Wine Company 2014 The Prisoner (Napa Valley) $39.99
The Prisoner red blend was inspired by the “mixed blacks” made by Italian immigrants who settled in the Napa Valley. Zinfandel leads the way, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petite Sirah and Charbono along for the ride. This is a rich wine packed with dense, luscious fruit.
NEW WINE & BEER ARRIVALS:
Frank Family 2014 Chardonnay (Carneros) $32.99
If you like rich, buttery Chardonnays, then look no further. The bouquet entices with tangy citrus, peach and pear aromas and a hint of apple pie spice. Lush pineapple, pear and citrus flavors are complemented by a delicious element of gingery spice.
Fable 2013 Pinot Meunier (Russian River Valley) $17.99
This was sourced from Dommen Vineyard on the famed “Starr Road” in the Russian River Valley. The 2013 Fable Pinot Meunier shows a deep, dark color. The nose is reminiscent of fall spices, toasted pumpkin seeds and orange zest. The palate is concentrated and firm, given its distinctive acidity. Flavors of brandied red cherries, raspberry and cinnamon linger on the finish.
Roth Estate 2013 Merlot (Sonoma County) $17.99
Roth Estate’s 2013 Sonoma County Merlot exudes lush aromas of cassis, blackberries, blueberry pie and sweet spices on the nose. With a soft, velvety texture and mouth-filling tannins, the wine offers a pleasurable array of blackberry, cassis, chocolate and vanilla notes.
Full Sail Brewing Bourbon-Barrel-Aged Wheatwine Ale (Newport, Oregon) $12.99
Full Sail Wheatwine is a fat, high-octane ale brewed in the style of a Barleywine but using 100% wheat mash, then aged in Wild Turkey barrels for one year. Sweet, chewy notes of taffy, dates and caramel abound on a creamy, boozy framework that let its floral hop accents emerge through a forest of rich, warm malts.
Cheers!
